Over the 100 years since its discovery, liquid crystals have been the intriguing subject for both academia and industries. The textbook of de Gennes The Physics of Liquid Crystals published in 1974 is still the bible for many LC researchers, but new subjects unmentioned in the book have also risen for these years. This chapter describes the story of the recent developments and the future perspectives in physics of liquid crystals, especially focusing on the contributions by Japanese research groups for the last decade.

Fundamentals of Liquid Crystal Devices

Recently, 'Liquid crystal display (LCD) vs. organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display: who wins?' has become a topic of heated debate. In this review, we perform a systematic and comparative study of these two flat panel display technologies. First, we review recent advances in LCDs and OLEDs, including material development, device configuration and system integration. Next we analyze and compare their performances by six key display metrics: response time, contrast ratio, color gamut, lifetime, power efficiency, and panel flexibility. In this section, we focus on two key parameters: motion picture response time (MPRT) and ambient contrast ratio (ACR), which dramatically affect image quality in practical application scenarios. MPRT determines the image blur of a moving picture, and ACR governs the perceived image contrast under ambient lighting conditions. It is intriguing that LCD can achieve comparable or even slightly better MPRT and ACR than OLED, although its response time and contrast ratio are generally perceived to be much inferior to those of OLED. Finally, three future trends are highlighted, including high dynamic range, virtual reality/augmented reality and smart displays with versatile functions.

Presently, liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays are two dominant flat panel display technologies Recently, inorganic mini-LEDs (mLEDs) and micro-LEDs (μLEDs) have emerged by significantly enhancing the dynamic range of LCDs or as sunlight readable emissive displays "mLED, OLED, or μLED: who wins?" is a heated debatable question In this review, we conduct a comprehensive analysis on the material properties, device structures, and performance of mLED/μLED/OLED emissive displays and mLED backlit LCDs We evaluate the power consumption and ambient contrast ratio of each display in depth and systematically compare the motion picture response time, dynamic range, and adaptability to flexible/transparent displays The pros and cons of mLED, OLED, and μLED displays are analysed, and their future perspectives are discussed

Metal silicides in CMOS technology : Past, present, and future trends

We investigated the dependence of the effective p/sup +/ buried layer implant dose for reducing junction leakage current on well-to-buried layer spacing. P/sup +/-n junction leakage current characteristics as function of the projected range difference between the p/sup +/ buried layer and well show that minimum well-to-buried layer spacing for suppressing leakage current should be wider than 2 /spl mu/m. Moreover, it is found that a wider well-to-buried layer spacing gives a lower buried layer dose available for suppressing junction leakage current. The junction leakage current characteristics with various well-to-buried layer spacings in conjunction with implanted doses of buried layer are closely related to the density of threading dislocations and their spatial extents from the buried layer. Taking these results and throughput issues due to low beam current performance at high energy range into account, the well depth should be decreased within the limit of acceptable transistor characteristics.

Dependence of the effective p/sup +/ buried layer implant dose for reducing junction leakage on well-to-buried layer spacing

We investigated the diffusion and activation behaviors of BF/sub 2/ implanted (15 keV, 2/spl times/10/sup 15/ cm/sup -2/) samples annealed at 1000/spl deg/C for 10 sec in different ambients (N/sub 2//NH/sub 3/) with respect to the presence or absence of the surface oxide. In presence of surface oxide, the sample annealed in ammonia ambient gives a shallower junction depth than one annealed in nitrogen ambient. From results of XPS and SIMS measurement, we analyzed the mechanism of nitrogen incorporation in ammonia ambient through the possibility of microetching reactions that can be driven by the ammonia radicals and the surface oxide.
