The effect of salinity on the antioxidative system of root mitochondria and peroxisomes of a cultivated tomato Lycopersicon esculentum (Lem) and its wild salt-tolerant related species L. pennellii (Lpa) was studied. Salt stress induced oxidative stress in Lem mitochondria, as indicated by the increased levels of lipid peroxidation and H(2)O(2). These changes were associated with decreased activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and guaiacol peroxidases (POD) and contents of ascorbate (ASC) and glutathione (GSH). By contrast, in mitochondria of salt-treated Lpa plants both H(2)O(2) and lipid peroxidation levels decreased while the levels of ASC and GSH and activities of SOD, several isoforms of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and POD increased. Similarly to mitochondria, peroxisomes isolated from roots of salt-treated Lpa plants exhibited also decreased levels of lipid peroxidation and H(2)O(2) and increased SOD, ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) activities. In spite of the fact that salt stress decreased activities of antioxidant enzymes in Lem peroxisome, oxidative stress was not evident in these organelles.

Salinity up‐regulates the antioxidative system in root mitochondria and peroxisomes of the wild salt‐tolerant tomato species Lycopersicon pennellii

In addition to its role in water and nutrient uptake, the root system is fundamentally important because it anchors a plant to its substrate. Although a wide variety of root systems exist across different species, all plants have a primary root (derived from an embryonic radicle) and different types of lateral roots. Adventitious roots, by comparison, display the same functions as lateral roots but develop from aerial tissues. In addition, they not only develop as an adaptive response to various stresses, such as wounding or flooding, but also are a key limiting component of vegetative propagation. Lateral and adventitious roots share key elements of the genetic and hormonal regulatory networks but are subject to different regulatory mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the developmental processes that give rise to lateral and adventitious roots and highlight knowledge acquired over the past few years about the mechanisms that regulate adventitious root formation.

Adventitious Roots and Lateral Roots: Similarities and Differences

Adventitious roots are plant roots that form from any nonroot tissue and are produced both during normal development (crown roots on cereals and nodal roots on strawberry [Fragaria spp.]) and in response to stress conditions, such as flooding, nutrient deprivation, and wounding. They are important economically (for cuttings and food production), ecologically (environmental stress response), and for human existence (food production). To improve sustainable food production under environmentally extreme conditions, it is important to understand the adventitious root development of crops both in normal and stressed conditions. Therefore, understanding the regulation and physiology of adventitious root formation is critical for breeding programs. Recent work shows that different adventitious root types are regulated differently, and here, we propose clear definitions of these classes. We use three case studies to summarize the physiology of adventitious root development in response to flooding (case study 1), nutrient deficiency (case study 2), and wounding (case study 3).

The Physiology of Adventitious Roots.

Soils that contain toxic amounts of minerals or are deficient in essential plant nutrients are widespread globally and seriously constrain rice production. New methods are necessary to incorporate the complex adaptive traits associated with tolerance of these abiotic stresses, while simultaneously retaining the high yield potential of rice varieties when conditions are favorable. Significant progress in the genetic characterization of stress response pathways and recent advances in genomics have provided powerful tools for in-depth dissection of tolerance mechanisms. Additionally, tolerance of most of these abiotic stresses in rice is controlled by a few QTLs with large effects despite the intricacy of the numerous traits involved. Genetic dissection of these QTLs and their incorporation into high-yielding varieties will significantly enhance and stabilize rice productivity in these problem soils. Current efforts at IRRI and in rice breeding programs worldwide are seeking to explore diverse germplasm collections and genetically dissect the causal mechanisms of tolerance to facilitate their use in breeding. This review focuses on salinity and P and Zn deficiency as the major problems encountered in rice soils, and examines current understanding of the mechanisms involved and efforts toward germplasm improvement.

Apple rootstock MM106 shoots, raised in vitro, rooted at 96.7% after culture on a medium supplemented with an auxin for 5 d in darkness followed by culture on a second medium without growth regulators for 25 d in light. In control conditions (in absence of auxin in the first medium), these shoots did not root. Putrescine (PUT), spermidine (SPD), cyclohexylamine (CHA), and aminoguanidine (AG) enhanced rooting when applied during the first d of culture in the absence of IBA; on the contrary, α-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) added to the first medium with IBA inhibited rooting. The endogenous levels of indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) and indole 3-acetylaspartic acid (IAAsp) increased up to a maximum concentration at days 2 and 3, respectively, in initial rooting conditions. PUT, when added with IBA, did not affect the typical IAA and IAAsp increase; when applied alone, it provoked an increase of their levels. Similar results were recorded with CHA. SPD, AG, and DFMO did not induce an increase of IAA and IAAsp in nonrooting conditions. The levels of endogenous PUT increased to a maximum at day 2 in rooting conditions; it was slightly affected by exogenous PUT and CHA application but reduced by SPD, AG, and DFMO. In rooting conditions, if the first medium was supplemented with SPD or AG, a small increase in peroxidase activity was observed, similar to that obtained with PUT treatment. The present work indicates an involvement of polyamines in the control of rooting and an interaction with auxins during the physiological phase of rooting. The consequence of this relationship was a different rooting expression, according especially to the content of these regulators in the culture medium.

Salt stress increased PAL activity, did not appreciably alter the Ca content, decreased the K content and increased the Na content of wheat roots. Apart from Na, the effects were slightly more pronounced in a salt-sensitive than in a salt-tolerant species.
