Phenotypic and genotypic divergence in Okra [Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench] and implications for drought tolerance breeding: A review

The fluctuation of potato production has been caused by production risk in on-farm sector. This research aims to identify the sources of production risk in potato production and analyze the strategies to overcome the production risk. This research was conducted at Cantigi Farmers’ Group, which has been actively producing potato in Cikajang Sub-district, Garut Regency, West Java. The data were collected from all 35 members of the Cantigi Farmers’ Group. This study used Z-Score and Value at Risk analyses. The results showed that the sources of potato production risk that occurred in the Cantigi Farmers’ Group were pests, diseases, rainfall, seed quality, managerial ability and soil fertility. Mitigation strategies can be used to overcome the risk sources such as by using intercropping method, plant-based pesticides, natural enemies, proper water management and drainage. Preventive strategies can be used to overcome the risk sources such as by using plant-based pesticides, organic fertilizers, assistance from local extension agents, in collaboration with certified seed breeders in the surrounding area and attending the training of how to breed properly. The research on potato production risk in Cikajang Sub-district is very significant considering that, to the best of authors’ knowledge, the analysis of potato production risks has not been conducted yet in this important area of potato producing. This study was conducted in a limited scope of variable, therefore, a further research of potato production risks is suggested to be performed in a wider variable scope.

The Risk and Strategies of Potato Production in Garut, Indonesia

Bu arastirma, farkli ekim zamanlarinda bazi nohut (Cicer arietinum L.) cesitlerinin morfolojik ve tane ozelliklerini belirlemek amaciyla 2017 yilinda Adiyaman ekolojik kosullarinda yurutulmustur. Calismada, yorede yaygin olarak ekimi yapilan Yerel genotip, digerleri Diyar-95, ILC-482 cesitleri ve uc farkli ekim zamani (15 Ocak, 25 Ocak ve 4 Şubat) denemeye tabi tutulmustur. Cesitler arasinda cikis gun sayisi, yan dal sayisi, bakla sayisi, olgunlasma gun sayisi, tane verimi ve 100 tane agirliginin onemli bulunmustur. Buna karsin, farkli ekim zamanlarinda bitki boyu, ana dal sayisi, yan dal sayisi, ciceklenme gun sayisi ve olgunlasma gun sayisinin onemli oldugu belirlenmistir. Elde edilen verilerden; cikis surelerinin 12.66–15.00 gun, bitki boylarinin 19.90–36.10 cm, ana dal sayilarinin 2.30–2.90 adet, yan dal sayilarinin 8.56–8.92 adet, ciceklenme gun surelerinin 75.00–79.00 gun, olgunlasma gun surelerinin 110–130 gun, bitkide bakla sayilarinin 38.71–44.15 adet, bitkide bakla agirliginin 22.13–24.88 g, dekara tane veriminin 155.40–182.60 kg da-1, 100-tane agirliginin 35.28–41.25 g, danede protein oraninin %25.60–27.80 arasinda degistigi ortaya konulmustur. Sonuc olarak;, 25 Ocak tarihindeki ekim zamaninin ve calismada kullanilan cesitlerin, nohutun verim ve verim bilesenleri uzerine katkisinin onemli oldugu, bu nedenle Adiyaman ve cevresi icin bu cesitlerin ve ekim zamaninin tavsiye edilebilecegi sonucuna varilmistir.

Adıyaman Ekolojik Koşullarında Farklı Ekim Zamanlarında Bazı Nohut (Cicer arietinum L.) Çeşitlerinin Verim ve Kalite Özelliklerinin Belirlenmesi

Present investigation was carried out at the Horticulture Research Centre, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut during zaid-2018-19. Analysis of variance revealed significant variability among the strains of okra for all character’s studied. Heritability estimates varied from 42.97 percentage for duration of crop to 97.07 percent for plant height. Number of primary branches showed high (>25%) GCV. Moderately high variability for GCV coupled with high estimates of heritability were observed for length of internode, number of nodes per plant, plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant and fruit yield (q/ha). High heritability (>60%) was obtained for plant height, number of fruits per plant, fruit yield per plant, number of nodes per plant, number of primary branches, fruit yield (q/ha), length of internode, days to first flower initiation, days to 50% flowering, and days to first fruit set. The moderate heritability (20%) was found to be highest for number of primary branches, length of internode, number of nodes per plant, plant height, number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant, while the moderate genetic advance (10%) was observed for fruit yield, days to first flower initiation, days to first fruit set, days to 50% flowering, days to first fruit picking, days to second fruit picking and fruit length.

Yield and Quality Response of Chickpea to Different Sowing Dates

Brinjal is one of the most popular solanaceous vegetables worldwide because of its nutritive and nutraceutical values. In recent decades, brinjal cultivation has been experiencing increased biotic and abioticstresses due to the climate changes, which had affected the cultivation practices, growers’ profit and consumers’ choice to a larger extent. Amongst different insect pests, brinjal shoot and fruit borer (BSFB) is the major one causing significant reduction in economic yield followed by epilachna beetle, aphid, jassid and whitefly. On the other hand, proper knowledge on nature of damage, host preference, and seasonal abundance of insect pests is a pre-requisite for development and deployment of an appropriate, effective and timely management strategy against the pests. A pool of literatures on host preferences, damage pattern and succession of major insect pests of brinjal has been reviewed and presented in this paper.

Host Preference, Mode of Damage and Succession of Major Insect Pests of Brinjal

The study was conducted in the experimental area of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka-1207, Bangladesh, during the period from July to October 2016 to find out the effect of different levels of NPK on insect pests in transplant aman rice. BRRI dhan33 was used as the test crop in this experiment. The experiment comprised of different NPK (Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium) fertilizers doses as treatment where, T0 = absolute control, no NPK fertilizers, T1 = NPK @ 45, 50, 40 kg/ha, T2 = NPK @ 70, 25, 40 kg/ha, T3 = NPK @ 70, 50, 20 kg/ha, T4 = NPK @ 70, 50, 40 kg/ha, T5 = NPK @ 70, 50, 60 kg/ha, T6 = NPK @ 70, 75, 40 kg/ha and T7 = NPK @ 95, 50, 40 kg/ha. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized complete block design (RCBD) plot with three replications. Data were recorded on different types of insect pests that were identified for the entire growing period with their number and incidence on rice plants. Original Research Article Aziz et al.; ARJA, 9(3): 1-15, 2018; Article no.ARJA.42953 2 During the entire growing period 5 selected hills/plot were monitored with clear observation on yellow stem borer, leaf folder, rice hispa, grasshopper, brown planthopper, green leafhopper and rice bug insects and pests. The lowest number of infestation of insects and pests was observed from T5, whereas the highest number was found in T7 treatment. In case of incidence percent of dead heart, data were observed at 25 th , 45 th and 65 th days after transplanting (DAT), respectively. Data recorded from each plot revealed that the lowest incidence of dead heart was observed in T5 (3.64%, 4.23% and 4.47% at NPK 70, 50, 60 kg/ha), while the highest incidence of dead heart was found in T7 (10.37%, 13.56% and 14.73%, respectively) treatment. In terms of white head incidence, at 60, 70 and 80 DAT, data recorded from each plot revealed that the lowest incidence of white head was found in T5 (2.35%, 2.66% and 3.12%, respectively), whereas the highest incidence of white head was observed in T7 (7.57%, 8.26% and 8.64% at NPK @ 95, 50, 40 kg/ha).
