Antibacterial screening of graphene-tin oxide nanocomposites synthesized from carbonized wood and coconut shell is investigated against Pseudomonas aeruginosa for the first time. Efficient and facile one step hydrothermal process adopted in the present work for the synthesis of graphene-tin oxide nanoparticles provides an ideal method for the economic large-scale production of the same. Graphene-tin oxide nanocomposites derived from wood charcoal possess a spherical morphology whereas rod like structures are seen in the case of coconut shell derivatives. An excitation independent fluorescence response is observed in graphene-tin oxide nanohybrids while graphene oxide nanostructures exhibited an excitation dependent behavior. These hydrophilic nanostructures are highly stable and exhibited no sign of luminescence quenching or particle aggregation even after a storage of 30 months. Bactericidal effects of the nanostructures obtained from coconut shell is found to be relatively higher compared to those procured from wood. This variation in antibacterial performance of the samples is directly related to their morphological difference which in turn is heavily influenced by the precursor material used. MIC assay revealed that coconut shell derived graphene-tin oxide composite is able to inhibit the bacterial growth at a lower concentration (250 μg/mL) than the other nanostructures. Nanocomposites synthesized from agro-waste displayed significantly higher antimicrobial activity compared to the precursor and graphene oxide nanostructures thereby making them excellent candidates for various bactericidal applications such as disinfectants, sanitary agents etc.

Facile synthesis of graphene-tin oxide nanocomposite derived from agricultural waste for enhanced antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Background: An increasing amount of populations all over the world are reported to have no access to clean and fresh water. Some traditional chemical disinfectants (free chlorine, chloramines, and ozone) are already widely used in the water industry; alarmingly, many of these are carcinogens. Furthermore, the resistance of microorganisms to these common chemical disinfectants is increasing; superior alternatives are therefore necessary. The development of nanoscience and nanotechnology within the last decades provides opportunities to deal with this problem. Objectives: In this study, the solvothermal method was employed to synthesize SnO 2 nanoparticles with spherical morphology in the absence of templates or structure-directing agents under mild conditions. The nanoparticles used to in the inactivation efficiencies for two microorganisms under UV irradiation and dark conditions. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, tin dioxide (SnO 2 ) nanoparticles have been synthesized via a simple solvothermal method in the absence of templates or structure-directing agents under mild conditions. The prepared SnO 2 sample was employed for the inactivation of Gram-negative Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29213) in MilliQ water under dark and UV illumination. The antibacterial activity of the synthesized SnO2 nanoparticles was evaluated using bacterium as per colony count method. Results: SnO 2 nanoparticles were successfully synthesized via solvothermal method under mild condition. SEM image showed SnO 2 nanoparticles were spherical when a mixture of water and ethanol used as solvent. The prepared SnO 2 nanoparticles were employed for the inactivation of gram-negative Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and gram-positive S.aureus (ATCC 29213) in MilliQ water. It was found that SnO 2 nanoparticles show much higher activity against E. coli than S.aureus. Conclusions: According to the result of this study, SnO 2 nanoparticles are an excellent antibacterial agent for bactericidal applications.

The Antibacterial Activity of SnO 2 Nanoparticles against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus

A new thiourea ligand (HL), namely N-(4-chlorophenyl)morpholine-4-carbothioamide and its Co(III), Ni(II) and Ag(I) complexes (1a, 1b and 1c) were synthesized and investigated by Fourier-transform infrared, 1H NMR and UV-visible spectroscopies. The compounds HL and 1c were characterized by single-crystal X-ray crystallography revealing the triclinic space group P
 $$\bar 1$$
 for both compounds. The inhibitory effect of HL ligand, 1a, 1b, and 1c complexes was investigated with in vitro tests on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. For the 1c complex, the results showed that the coordination of the HL to Ag(I) ion increased its antibacterial effect especially against E. coli. The assays also indicated that for the same bacteria strains, the new complexes showed higher activity than the ligand, with the relative activity 1c > 1b > 1a > HL. Moreover, all samples were more suitable antimicrobial agents against the Gram-negative than those of the Gram-positive bacteria. Eventually, the relationship between the structure and bactericidal activities of these specimens was examined by calculating frontier molecular orbital (HOMO and LUMO) energies using density functional theory method at the 6‐31 G*/LANL2DZ level of theory.
