Ferrofluid lubrication of finite journal bearings using Jenkins model

Abstract Thermal effects have been investigated in a porous inclined slider bearing together with the slip boundary conditions. Using Jenkins model, the governing system of equations pertaining to the flow is solved analytically to yield the various bearing characteristics. The expressions for mean temperature, pressure and the lifting force (load carrying capacity) have been derived as a function of slip, magnetic, permeability, material and thermal parameters. Furthermore, the term pertaining to the co-rotational derivative of magnetization is expected to influence the lifting force significantly. Therefore its effect on the bearing characteristics is also considered. The lubricant is assumed to be incompressible, and its viscosity varies exponentially with the temperature. The behavior of mean temperature with other bearing characteristics across the fluid film thickness has also been investigated. The variations in the lifting force and mean temperature w.r.t. various bearing parameters have been analyzed graphically.

Performance analysis of porous inclined slider bearing based on magnetite nanosuspension has been carried out to investigate the effects of slip parameter arising out of modeling. The expression for load carrying capacity has been derived analytically as a function of slip, magnetic, permeability and material parameters. Furthermore, the effect of an important term pertaining to the co-rotational derivative of magnetization is usually ignored by the researchers working on similar problems. However, as this term is expected to influence the load carrying capacity significantly, this paper investigates its effect on the bearing performance parameters under the present conditions. Besides, the effect of varying the inlet-outlet ratio has also been studied. It has been found that with an increase in the inlet-outlet ratio up to an optimum value, the load carrying capacity increases followed by a decreasing trend.

Considering the rotation of ferromagnetic particles, the present study investigates hydrodynamic lubrication by ferrofluids of finite journal bearings using the Shliomis model. A magnetic field created by displaced finite wire is used. A numerical solution for the modified Reynolds equation using the finite difference method is obtained. Static characteristics of finite journal bearings are analysed using three control parameters: rotational viscosity, magnetization and volume concentration of the ferromagnetic particles. It is shown that the pressure, load capacity, attitude angle and side leakage increase and the friction coefficient decreases when increasing the value of each control parameter. Similar trends are also obtained when increasing values of eccentricity for a fixed value of each control parameter except for the decrease of the attitude angle.
