The stress of life

This study empirically examined the moderating effects of emotional intelligence on job stress and self-reported safety behaviour in the context of container terminal operations using survey data collected from 430 respondents who worked in the container terminals in Taiwan. A hierarchical regression analysis was used for data analysis. The research findings indicate that job stress negatively affects safety behaviour in terms of safety compliance, as well as emotional intelligence positively affects safety behaviour in terms of safety participation and safety compliance. Results also indicated that emotional intelligence plays a moderating role on the relationships between job stress and safety compliance. The theoretical and practical implications from the research findings are discussed.

Investigating the effect of emotional intelligence education on baccalaureate nursing students' emotional intelligence scores.

Background/objective: Many health care institutions and employers have begun to realize the need for health professionals’ emotional intelligence to be improved continuously. Education, in-service training and tenure prolongation have been the traditional methods for developing and enhancing competencies in the literature. This study attempts to ascertain whether or not these three traditional methods are applicable for enhancing the emotional intelligence of nurses if not specialized. Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional quantitative research design was used in this study. Enhancing nurses’ emotional intelligence: Are tenure prolongation, education and in-service training applicable methods even when not specialized?

Aims: Nursing profession is full of interactions especially regarding its affective dimension. Nurses need to have a better understanding and management of their own and their patients’ emotions so that they will be able to make the right decisions and offer the best heath care services. The present study was an attempt to check the relationship between different components of emotional intelligence and some of the demographical variables in nurses. Method: It was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study conducted in 2011 on 212 nurses (101 female and 111 male) in some selected military hospitals in Tehran, Iran. Bradberi and Greaves questionnaire was used in order to assess the components of emotional intelligence. Results: The average emotional intelligence score was 79.4. Self-awareness and social awareness had the highest scores among the four components. From among all the demographic variables, only the level of education and fee showed a significant correlation with selfmanagement. Conclusion: The results showed that the majority of nurses enjoyed an average level of emotional intelligence.

On the Relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Demographic Variables in Nurses

Emotional intelligence is one of the biggest factors that contributes to the success of individuals who assume various tasks and roles in modern life. It is also important in determining how individuals cope with the stress that can potentially limit their emotional relationships, decrease their efficiency, and reduce the pleasure of life. The main purposes of this study were to consider the concepts of emotional intelligence and stress, and to conduct an applied study of the relationship between these two variables. The nurses who worked at some of the private and governmental hospitals in the province of Ankara were studied, and this present study identified a significant relationship between emotional intelligence and stress.
