In the last years, most countries experienced improved health outcomes as longevity increased steadily and infant mortality rate decreased, along with a growth of the health expenditures. The paper aims to analyze the relationship between the dynamics of the inputs and the outputs of health care systems. The input of the health care system is expressed by health care expenditures per capita (current US$) and the output of the health care systems is expressed by life expectancy at birth (years). The data are collected for 175 world countries, grouped according to the geographic position and income level, over 16 years (1995-2010). We apply a panel data analysis to estimate life expectancy by a function of health expenditures. The obtained results show a significant relationship between health expenditures and life expectancy. Country effects are significant and show the existence of important differences among the countries.

The Relationship between Life Expectancy at Birth and Health Expenditures Estimated by a Cross-country and Time-series Analysis

The objective of this study was to examine the change in efficiency of health care systems of 34 OECD countries between 2000 and 2012, a period marked by significant health reform in most OECD countries. This paper uses a novel Dynamic Network Data Envelopment Analysis (DNDEA) model to analyze the efficiency of the public health system and the medical care system of these OECD countries independently along with assessing the efficiency of their overall health system. This helps understand the relative priorities for improving the overall health system. The data for this study was obtained from the OECD Health Facts database. The study findings suggest that countries which improved their public health system were more likely to show overall improvement in efficiency.

Assessing efficiency of public health and medical care provision in OECD countries after a decade of reform

Background Determinants of health or health production function in health economics literature constitute noticeable issues in health promotion. This study aimed at estimating a health production function for East Mediterranean Region (EMR) based on the Grossman theoretical model. Methods This ecological study was performed using the econometric methods. The panel data model was used in order to determine the relationship between life expectancy and socioeconomic factors. The data for 21 EMR countries between 1995 and 2007 were used. Fixed-effect-model was employed to estimate the parameters based on Hausman test. Results In estimating the health production function, factors such as income per capita (β=0.05, P 0.001). Conclusion In order to improve the health status in EMR countries, health policymakers should focus on the factors which lie outside the healthcare system. These factors are mainly associated with economic growth and development level. Thus, the economic stabilisation policies with the aim of increasing the productivity, economic growth, and reducing unemployment play significant roles in the health status of the people of the region.

A fixed-effects panel data model was used to examine the factors influencing life expectancy and infant mortality. More specifically the impact of economic, institutional, and social factors in determining the dependent variables are measured and evaluated.
