What makes organizations so similar? We contend that the engine of rationalization and bureaucratization has moved from the competitive marketplace to the state and the professions. Once a set of organizations emerges as a field, a paradox arises: rational actors make their organizations increasingly similar as they try to change them. We describe three isomorphic processes-coercive, mimetic, and normative—leading to this outcome. We then specify hypotheses about the impact of resource centralization and dependency, goal ambiguity and technical uncertainty, and professionalization and structuration on isomorphic change. Finally, we suggest implications for theories of organizations and social change.

Evidence-based policy seeks to use evidence in public policy in a systematic way in a bid to improve decision-making quality. Evidence-based policy cannot work properly and achieve the expected results without accurate, appropriate, and sufficient evidence. Given the prevalence of social media and intense user engagement, the question to ask is whether the data on social media can be used as evidence in the policy-making process. The question gives rise to the debate on what characteristics of data should be considered as evidence. Despite the numerous research studies carried out on social media analysis or policy-making, this domain has not been dealt with through an “evidence detection” lens. Thus, this study addresses the gap in the literature on how to analyze the big text data produced by social media and how to use it for policy-making based on evidence detection. The present paper seeks to fill the gap by developing and offering a model that can help policy-makers to distinguish “evidence” from “non-evidence”. To do so, in the first phase of the study, the researchers elicited the characteristics of the “evidence” by conducting a thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with experts and policy-makers. In the second phase, the developed model was tested against 6-month data elicited from Twitter accounts. The experimental results show that the evidence detection model performed better with decision tree (DT) than the other algorithms. Decision tree (DT) outperformed the other algorithms by an 85.9% accuracy score. This study shows how the model managed to fulfill the aim of the present study, which was detecting Twitter posts that can be used as evidence. This study contributes to the body of knowledge by exploring novel models of text processing and offering an efficient method for analyzing big text data. The practical implication of the study also lies in its efficiency and ease of use, which offers the required evidence for policy-makers.

Modelling International Project Feasibility of Sustainable Construction Management: Case Study of Tele-Communication Towers

It is well known that finite element analysis (FEA) is a powerful tool when it comes to the design and analysis of complex structures for various load combinations, including light steel curve members. This abstract provides an overview of the FEA simulation process for designing such members (cure members), which involves constructing a 3D model, discretising the member into small elements, assigning material properties, defining boundary conditions, conducting the simulation, analysing the results, and making any necessary modifications to the design. FEA simulations can provide valuable insights into the behaviour of light steel curved members under different load combinations. This enables designers to optimise designs for strength, safety, and cost-effectiveness. This article proposes using two commercial 3D software programs, Rhino 7 and Strand7, to complete the FEA simulation of light steel curved members. The 3D model is created in Rhino 7, and the individual elements are discretised into more minor elements using Strand7 for assigning material properties, defining boundary conditions, running simulations, and analysing the results. The paper presents five case studies of steel–glass façades and applies the proposed methodology to each. Examples include Phoenix International Media Center in Beijing, Kazakhstan Pavilion and Science Museum in Astana, Moynihan Train Hall in New York City, Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne, and the central light rail station in The Hague.

Exploring the Integration of Architectural Design and Advanced Structural Analysis for Steel–Glass Structures: A Comparative Study of Different Case Scenarios

It was widely reported in the early 2000s that geopolymer technology exhibits superior mechanical properties and lower global warming potential (GWP) over the use of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). However, a major limitation observed in the sustainability evaluation is a lack of consideration of environmental impacts from the use of industrial waste. This observation led to the purpose of this study, which is to identify the key factors throughout geopolymer production that contribute to its sustainability performance. In this paper, two geopolymers made of fly ash (G-FA) and cenospheres (G-C) were examined by mechanical testing while their sustainability impacts on a cradle-to-grave approach were investigated. The industrial waste and transport modelling impacts were given special attention in the performed life-cycle assessment. After 28 days of curing, G-FA exhibited 64.56 MPa and 6.03 MPa of compressive strength and flexural strength, respectively. G-C, with ¾ of G-FA bulk density, achieved 19.09 MPa and 3.13 MPa, respectively, with no significant changes observed after 14 days of curing. By upscaling the inventories to 1 m3 of industrial production scale, geopolymers showed a GWP reduction up to 49.7% compared to OPC with natural aggregates and presented benefits on human health damage category by 23.7% (G-FA) to 41.6% (G-C). In conclusion, geopolymer mortars establish compressive strength and flexural strength that are adequate for construction applications and present sustainability benefits in GWP, which suggests them to be potential substitutions for OPC. However, the industrial waste treatment (i.e., preparation of fly ash) will deplete water bodies, and the sodium silicate induces significant environmental burdens during its manufacture, becoming the key factor to enhance the geopolymer’s sustainability.
