The influence of unintended specimen pre-shear and out-of-plane wrinkling on the accuracy of shear angle and axial force results, measured during a uniaxial bias extension (UBE) test on engineering fabrics, is examined. Three techniques of measuring test kinematics are investigated, including manual image analysis, 2-D and 3-D full-field analysis. Error introduced by specimen pre-shear is shown to influence test results in different ways, depending on analysis technique. Procedures to take specimen pre-shear error into account when interpreting results are demonstrated, though an important recommendation resulting from this investigation is to minimise pre-shear as much as possible. Out-of-plane wrinkling is shown to create significant errors in kinematic data when using 2-D analysis methods (up to 20% overestimates of measured shear angle). It is shown that wrinkle-error can be corrected if 3-D stereoscopic analysis methods are employed.

In-plane shear is considered as the main deformation mechanism during the forming of fabrics on double curved geometries. Non-Crimp Fabrics (NCFs) are more and more used in the industry thanks to their high mechanical performances. The uniaxial bias extension (UBE) test is commonly used for characterizing the in-plane shear behavior of fabrics. However, presence of slippages calls the reliability of this test into question for NCF material. These slippages lead to a macroscopic kinematic which does not respect the fundamental hypotheses of UBE test theory. The variety of NCF architectures is usually pointed while the lack of standardized experimental methods is seldom discussed. The first section of this paper presents a two-way approach to detect slippage on an NCF. This approach is based on two kinematical descriptions of the UBE test. The first one assumes a pure shear behavior whereas the second one assumes a simple shear behavior. These behaviors correspond respectively to the rotation of fibers and to the slippage of fibers from a macroscopic point of view. In the second section, the two-way approach is used to analyze experimental UBE tests. This investigation highlights the influence of the sample width on the deformation mode during a UBE test. More precisely, it is shown that increasing the sample width of NCF specimens improves the UBE test reliability.

The virulence and resistance of pathogenic microorganisms are promoted by quorum-sensing (QS) mediated traits and biofilms. The development of antimicrobial agents which can reduce the incidence of microbial resistance by disrupting the establishment of biofilms and QS, constitute a suitable strategy to reduce the emergence of pathogenic strains that are resistant to antibiotics. In this study, 3-(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene) pentane-2,4-dione (1) and ethyl-2-cyano-2-(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene) acetate (2) were successfully synthesized and characterized using EIMS, 1H NMR and 13C NMR techniques. On S. aureus, both compounds had MIC (minimal inhibitory concentrations) of 0.625 mg/mL while on E. coli and C. albicans, compound 2 showed higher activity than compound 1. All compounds inhibited formation of biofilms by C. albicans and S. aureus at sub-MIC with compound 1 being more active than compound 2. On E. coli, only compound 1 inhibited biofilm formation. Violacein production of violacein in C. violaceum CV12472 and quorum sensing in C. violaceum CV026 were inhibited indicating that the compounds could block signal production and reception. Anti-quorum sensing at sub-MIC concentrations revealed by inhibition zones were 13.0±0.5 mm and 8.0±0.5 mm at MIC and MIC/2 respectively for compound 1 and for compound 2, they were 11.5±0.4 mm and 7.5±0.0 mm at MIC and MIC/2 respectively. Concentration-dependent swarming motility was exhibited by both compounds with compound 1 slightly more active than compound 2. The results indicate that the organosulphur compounds could be suitable candidates for modern antibiotics.

﻿Synthesis and evaluation of inhibitory potentials of microbial biofilms and quorum-sensing by 3-(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene) pentane-2,4-dione and ethyl-2-cyano-2-(1,3-dithian-2-ylidene) acetate

The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of a hypoelastic constitutive model. An accurate and robust numerical algorithm is developed and implemented in the Abaqus/Explicit finite element code by means of a vectorized user material (VUMAT) subroutine written in FORTRAN. To validate this model, several elementary tests with different loading conditions were performed on two different types of commingled fiberglass–polypropylene woven composite. The numerical values obtained for the simple tensile test, simple shear test, and objectivity test, were in good agreement with the analytical results of the same tests. The second part of this study was dedicated to the extension of the validation process by performing more realistic simulations of the standard in-plane shear test (picture frame). The numerical responses obtained from the simulation of the picture frame and those from the benchmark curried out by Cao et al. are in good agreement.

RÉSUMÉ. La concentration de contraintes est un problème rencontré lors de la conception et du design d’une structure mécanique. Ce phénomène conduit à une amplification locale des contraintes dans une zone comportant une modification géométrique ou une singularité. Cette zone est souvent le site d’amorçage des fissures et peut être l’origine d’une rupture brutale. Cette étude concerne principalement le phénomène de concentration de contraintes dans une plaque rectangulaire finie orthotrope soumise à un champ de traction uniforme, en présence de deux trous circulaires. Plusieurs paramètres ont été considérés à savoir l’orientation des fibres, les caractéristiques mécaniques des composites et l’interdistance entre les trous.
