Psychological maltreatment, emotional and behavioral problems in adolescents: The mediating role of resilience and self-esteem

We used social information processing theory to examine the effect of work–family conflict (WFC) at the work group level on individuals’ experience of WFC. Consistent with hypotheses, results suggest that WFC at the work group level influences individual WFC over and above the shared work environment and job demands. It was also observed that work group support and demographic dissimilarity moderate this relationship. Moderator analyses suggest that work group social support buffers WFC for individuals but is also associated with a stronger effect of work group WFC on individuals’ WFC. Moreover, the work group effect on individuals’ WFC was shown to be stronger for individuals who were demographically dissimilar to the work group in terms of sex and number of dependents. The interpretations and implications of these findings are discussed.

This study examined the relation between exposure to violence and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) of adolescents and the moderator effects of resilience, self-esteem and social support. Measures of exposure to violence, resilience, self-esteem, social support and PTSD symptoms were administered on 280 secondary school adolescents randomly selected from Kwara state, Nigeria. Data were analysed using hierarchical multiple regression. Exposure to violence was positively related to PTSD. The relationship between exposure to violence and PTSD was moderated by resilience, self-esteem and social support such that the relationship was weaker for adolescents having higher levels of the moderators. The implications of the findings in terms of providing counselling interventions for the adolescents exposed to violence were discussed.

Moderating Effects of Resilience, Self-Esteem and Social Support on Adolescents’ Reactions to Violence

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of job stress, personality and social support to burnout among college of education lecturers. The second purpose was to examine the extent to which personality and social support can buffer the negative effects of stress on burnout. Survey methodology was used for this study. Job stress, personality and social support were used to predict emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal accomplishment. Findings showed that job stress, personality dimensions and social support jointly and separately predicted dimensions of burnout. Personality and social support interacted with job stress to predict personal accomplishment. Results support the view that, environmental (job stress and social support) and personal factors (personality traits) have influence on burnout. The papers findings imply that interventions designed to improve lecturers’ classroom management skills, social network and assessment of their personality traits may have positive impact in combating burnout.
