Abstract: This study was designed to assess relationship development of single-parents focusing on the communicative affect of their immediate social network (children and ex-spouse). The research used Levinger's (1983) developmental scheme to investigate the beginning phase of relationships, concentrating on dating opportunity, impressions and interaction from the single-parent's perspective This study surveyed a sample of 83 Parents Without Partners members. One-way analysis of variance and t-tests were conducted and the following results were found: (1) length of time as a single-parent significantly differed with the frequency of participation in social activities, (2) length of time as a single-parent significantly differed with impressions parents have of people they dated, (3) from the parent's perspective, children's attitudes toward their parent's dating relationships significantly differed with the children's reactions toward the dating partners, (4) there was a significant gender differences for how soon...
