The content of a reading dictionary 3 made of a ROM consists of an index, a Kanji, a part of speech, a declension/conjugation and number of word stems, that is, number of characters of the reading of Kanji. A postpositional word table 4 made of a ROM accommodates the Kana character string of postpositional word. A declension Kana ending table 5 made of a ROM accommodates the kind of declension and a Kana character string in the declension ending corresponding thereto. The input character buffer 6 consists of a RAM storing tentatively the inputted Kana character string, a resulting buffer 7 consists of the RAM storing the Kanji after Kana/Kanji conversion and the number of characters of their stems tentatively and a CPU 8 controls the Japanese word processor.

SOLUTION: The function for changing the input mode to the uppercase English letter/numeral input mode or to the lowercase English letter/numeral input mode is given to the pound key of a numeric keypad 64, so that the input mode can be changed to the uppercase English letter/numeral input mode or to the lowercase English letter/numeral input mode based on the operation of the pound key of the numeric keypad 64. Therefore, even if uppercase letters and lowercase letters are mixed in the name of the other party, uppercase English letters and lowercase English letters can be easily inputted by changing the input mode based on the operation of the pound key. Moreover, if the form of the implementation is applied to an Internet facsimile machine, the mail address of the other party can be easily inputted even if uppercase English letters and lowercase English letters are mixed in the mail address.

CONSTITUTION:If plural keys are simultaneously depressed at the time of key operation, at least the outputs of one axis out of respective axial outputs X1- X4, Y1-Y3 are simultaneously overlapped and turned to ''1'' and any one of inputs to at least one of encoders ENC1, ENC2 is turned to ''H''. Therefore, all outputs D1-D8 from at least one of the encoders ENC1, ENC2 are kept at ''L''. Outputs from at least one of NAND gates G1, G2 are kept at ''H'' and outputs from at least one of EXOR gates G5, G6 are trned to ''H'' and sent as an overlapped signal DD through an OR gate 7. Consequently, whether the key operation is single operation or not is detected and the key operation can be monitored effectively.

The KANA and KANA small letter keys are shift keys which are used to set the mode; while a register or clear key is a function key.
