We review a range of techniques related to navigation of unmanned vehicles through unknown environments with obstacles, especially those that rigorously ensure collision avoidance (given certain assumptions about the system). This topic continues to be an active area of research, and we highlight some directions in which available approaches may be improved. The paper discusses models of the sensors and vehicle kinematics, assumptions about the environment, and performance criteria. Methods applicable to stationary obstacles, moving obstacles and multiple vehicles scenarios are all reviewed. In preference to global approaches based on full knowledge of the environment, particular attention is given to reactive methods based on local sensory data, with a special focus on recently proposed navigation laws based on model predictive and sliding mode control.

Algorithms for collision-free navigation of mobile robots in complex cluttered environments: a survey

An approach for formally verifying the safety of automated vehicles is proposed. Due to the uniqueness of each traffic situation, we verify safety online, i.e., during the operation of the vehicle. The verification is performed by predicting the set of all possible occupancies of the automated vehicle and other traffic participants on the road. In order to capture all possible future scenarios, we apply reachability analysis to consider all possible behaviors of mathematical models considering uncertain inputs (e.g., sensor noise, disturbances) and partially unknown initial states. Safety is guaranteed with respect to the modeled uncertainties and behaviors if the occupancy of the automated vehicle does not intersect that of other traffic participants for all times. The applicability of the approach is demonstrated by test drives with an automated vehicle at the Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.

Nowadays, robots interact more frequently with a dynamic environment outside limited manufacturing sites and in close proximity with humans. Thus, safety of motion and obstacle avoidance are vital safety features of such robots. We formally study two safety properties of avoiding both stationary and moving obstacles: (i) passive safety, which ensures that no collisions can happen while the robot moves, and (ii) the stronger passive friendly safety in which the robot further maintains sufficient maneuvering distance for obstacles to avoid collision as well. We use hybrid system models and theorem proving techniques that describe and formally verify the robot’s discrete control decisions along with its continuous, physical motion. Moreover, we formally prove that safety can still be guaranteed despite location and actuator uncertainty.

On Provably Safe Obstacle Avoidance for Autonomous Robotic Ground Vehicles

This paper addresses the problem of local navigation for autonomous mobile robots in partially observable dynamic environments. The main contribution of this work is the expansion of a sampling based approach to deal with the robot and environment dynamic constraints and integrate a safety distance to keep the robot away from collisions. The developed algorithm has been implemented on a robotic platform with a Robot Operating System based embedded architecture, where it has been tested and validated in an indoor environment.
