A Brief History of Project Management

When neighboring disciplines fail to learn from each other: The case of innovation and project management research

This paper sets out to review literature on the efficacy of monitoring and evaluation in achieving project success in Kenya. Several studies have been carried out with an aim of determining the critical success factors (CSFs) which contribute to project success. The analysis of these studies shows a particular pattern of events. Some CSFs appears consistently in a number of studies. One such factor is the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) function. The researcher used literature review approach to analyze the factors related to M&E influencing project success. All the factors identified were grouped into four main categories which are: Strength of M&E team, monitoring approach adopted, political influence and project lifecycle stage. The study further identified management support as a mediating factor between M&E and the Project Success. A good M&E without management support is likely not to succeed.

Efficacy of Monitoring and Evaluation Function in Achieving Project Success in Kenya: A Conceptual Framework

Future project teams will consist of both humans and nonhumans as organizations’ internal and external landscapes are becoming more connected during the fourth Industrial Revolution. This paper explores the competencies project team members should require and what the impact is on the project management of these teams. The impact of Industry 4.0 is felt in various industries. Research on the impact of Industry 4.0 focuses mostly on future factories and the integration of technologies. Little or no research has been done on the impact of Industry 4.0 on project management or, for that matter, project teams. This paper focuses on the demands of Industry 4.0 to determine what future demands there will be on team members as well as the competencies that team members need to exhibit to cope with and meet these demands. The results imply that four categories of competencies are required of future project team members, in particular critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The composition of future project teams will also drastically change with the introduction of artificially intelligent robots as team members.

Towards a ‘New Project Management’ movement? An international development perspective

Long before there was an institute for project management, or updated knowledge books and guides on how to manage projects, or even before the existence of Gantt charts, history offers several examples of colossal projects successfully completed. The Pyramids of Giza, Great Wall of China, and Coliseum are all good examples of such projects. Project Management, at its core, is concerned with creating an environment where people can work together to achieve a mutual objective, in order to deliver successful projects on time and on budget. Throughout the history of humanity, humans have been working on improving and refining the practices of project management. The goal of this paper is to present the evolution of project management since ancient times until present times and its outlook in the future by outlining major events and developments throughout history.
