The Delaunay triangulation, in both classic and more generalized sense, is studied in this paper for minimizing the linear interpolation error (measure in L^P-norm) for a given function. The classic Delaunay triangulation can then be characterized as an optimal triangulation that minimizes the interpolation error for the isotropic function ‖x‖^2 among all the triangulations with a given set of vertices. For a more general function, a functiondependent Delaunay triangulation is then defined to be an optimal triangulation that minimizes the interpolation error for this function and its construction can be obtained by a simple lifting and projection procedure. The optimal Delaunay triangulation is the one that minimizes the interpolation error among all triangulations with the same number of vertices, i.e. the distribution of vertices are optimized in order to minimize the interpolation error. Such a function-depend entoptimal Delaunay triangulation is proved to exist for any given convex continuous function.On an optimal Delaunay triangulation associated with f, it is proved that △↓f at the interior vertices can be exactly recovered by the function values on its neighboring vertices.Since the optimal Delaunay triangulation is difficult to obtain in practice, the concept of nearly optimal triangulation is introduced and two sufficient conditions are presented for a triangulation to be nearly optimal.

Hyperbolic manifolds and Kleinian groups

Since the end of the 19th century, and after the works of F. Klein and H. Poincare, it is well known that models of elliptic geometry and hyperbolic geometry can be given using projective geometry, and that Euclidean geometry can be seen as a "limit" of both geometries. Then all the geometries that can be obtained in this way. Some of these geometries had a rich development, most remarkably hyperbolic geometry and the Lorentzian geometries of Minkowski, de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spaces, which in higher dimension have had large interest for a long time in mathematical physics and more precisely in General Relativity. Moreover, some degenerate spaces appear naturally in the picture, namely the co-Euclidean space (the space of hyperplanes of the Euclidean space), and the co-Minkowski space (that we will restrict to the space of space-like hyperplanes of Minkowski space), first because of duality reasons, and second because they appear as limits of degeneration of classical spaces. In fact, co-Minkowski space recently regained interest under the name half-pipe geometry. The purpose of the present paper is to provide a survey on the properties of these spaces, especially in dimensions 2 and 3, from the point of view of projective geometry. Even with this perspective, the paper does not aim to be an exhaustive treatment. Instead it is focused on the aspects which concern convex subsets and their duality, degeneration of geometries and some properties of surfaces in three-dimensional spaces. The presentation is intended to be elementary, hence containing no deep proofs of theorems, but trying to proceed by accessible observations and elementary proofs.

Spherical, hyperbolic, and other projective geometries: convexity, duality, transitions

The aim of this chapter is to provide an introduction to Anti-de Sitter geometry, with special emphasis on dimension three and on the relations with Teichmuller theory, whose study has been initiated by the seminal paper of Geoffrey Mess in 1990. In the first part we give a broad introduction to Anti-de Sitter geometry in any dimension. The main results of Mess, including the classification of maximal globally hyperbolic Cauchy compact manifolds and the construction of the Gauss map, are treated in the second part. Finally, the third part contains related results which have been developed after the work of Mess, with the aim of giving an overview on the state-of-the-art.

A geometric transition is a continuous path of geometric structures that changes type, meaning that the model geometry, ie the homogeneous space on which the structures are modeled, abruptly changes In order to rigorously study transitions, one must define a notion of geometric limit at the level of homogeneous spaces, describing the basic process by which one homogeneous geometry may transform into another We develop a general framework to describe transitions in the context that both geometries involved are represented as sub-geometries of a larger ambient geometry Specializing to the setting of real projective geometry, we classify the geometric limits of any sub-geometry whose structure group is a symmetric subgroup of the projective general linear group As an application, we classify all limits of three-dimensional hyperbolic geometry inside of projective geometry, finding Euclidean, Nil, and Sol geometry among the limits We prove, however, that the other Thurston geometries, in particular $\mathbb{H}^2 \times \mathbb{R}$ and $\widetilde{\operatorname{SL}_2 \mathbb{R}}$, do not embed in any limit of hyperbolic geometry in this sense

Limits of geometries

We study convex polyhedra in three-space that are inscribed in a quadric surface. Up to projective transformations, there are three such surfaces: the sphere, the hyperboloid, and the cylinder. Our main result is that a planar graph $\Gamma$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the hyperboloid or cylinder if and only if $\Gamma$ is realized as the $1$-skeleton of a polyhedron inscribed in the sphere and $\Gamma$ admits a Hamiltonian cycle. Rivin characterized convex polyhedra inscribed in the sphere by studying the geometry of ideal polyhedra in hyperbolic space. We study the case of the hyperboloid and the cylinder by parameterizing the space of convex ideal polyhedra in anti-de Sitter geometry and in half-pipe geometry. Just as the cylinder can be seen as a degeneration of the sphere and the hyperboloid, half-pipe geometry is naturally a limit of both hyperbolic and anti-de Sitter geometry. We promote a unified point of view to the study of the three cases throughout.

We study the (relative) SL(2,C) character varieties of the four-holed sphere and the action of the mapping class group on it. We describe a domain of discontinuity for this action, and, in the case of real characters, show that this domain of discontinuity may be non-empty on the components where the relative euler class is non-maximal.

On the character variety of the four-holed sphere

Celebrated work of Alexandrov and Pogorelov determines exactly which metrics on the sphere are induced on the boundary of a compact convex subset of hyperbolic three-space. As a step toward a generalization for unbounded convex subsets, we consider convex regions of hyperbolic three-space bounded by two properly embedded disks which meet at infinity along a Jordan curve in the ideal boundary. In this setting, it is natural to augment the notion of induced metric on the boundary of the convex set to include a gluing map at infinity which records how the asymptotic geometry of the two surfaces compares near points of the limiting Jordan curve. Restricting further to the case in which the induced metrics on the two bounding surfaces have constant curvature $K \in [-1,0)$ and the Jordan curve at infinity is a quasicircle, the gluing map is naturally a quasisymmetric homeomorphism of the circle. The main result is that for each value of $K$, every quasisymmetric map is achieved as the gluing map at infinity along some quasicircle. We also prove analogous results in the setting of three-dimensional anti de Sitter geometry. Our results may be viewed as universal versions of the conjectures of Thurston and Mess about prescribing the induced metric on the boundary of the convex core of quasifuchsian hyperbolic manifolds and globally hyperbolic anti de Sitter spacetimes.

The induced metric on the boundary of the convex hull of a quasicircle in hyperbolic and anti de Sitter geometry

Let $\Sigma$ be a surface of negative Euler characteristic together with a pants decomposition $\P$. Kra's plumbing construction endows $\Sigma$ with a projective structure as follows. Replace each pair of pants by a triply punctured sphere and glue, or `plumb', adjacent pants by gluing punctured disk neighbourhoods of the punctures. The gluing across the $i^{th}$ pants curve is defined by a complex parameter $\tau_i \in \C$. The associated holonomy representation $\rho: \pi_1(\Sigma) \to PSL(2,\C)$ gives a projective structure on $\Sigma$ which depends holomorphically on the $\tau_i$. In particular, the traces of all elements $\rho(\gamma), \gamma \in \pi_1(\Sigma)$, are polynomials in the $\tau_i$. 
Generalising results proved in previous papers for the once and twice punctured torus respectively, we prove a formula giving a simple linear relationship between the coefficients of the top terms of $\rho(\gamma)$, as polynomials in the $\tau_i$, and the Dehn-Thurston coordinates of $\gamma$ relative to $\P$. 
This will be applied elsewhere to give a formula for the asymptotic directions of pleating rays in the Maskit embedding of $\Sigma$ as the bending measure tends to zero.
