TL;DR: LOS parameters for mixed traffic situations have been redefined in the present study due to many problems associated with the measurement and interpretation of delay at signalised intersections.
Abstract: Currently, level of service (LOS) at signalised intersection is defined in terms of stopped delay caused to a vehicle. In India, vehicles do not move one after another, and therefore, delay cannot be defined for individual lanes. Number of arrivals may vary widely from one cycle to another depending upon the mix, thus, changing the approach delay considerably. Due to many problems associated with the measurement and interpretation of delay at signalised intersections LOS parameters for mixed traffic situations have been redefined in the present study. Degree of saturation and percent vehicles stopping in the approach were considered the appropriate parameters. Data collected at eight signalised intersections in Delhi metropolis have been analysed and breakpoints for various levels of service have been determined.
