TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed to suppress a woods-shaped echo noise by performing a deflecting scanning before and after an angle of incidence of longitudinal waves adapted to the characteristic of a welded part by electronic scan type ultrasonic flaw detecting method and focusing a beam to a flaw detection part to detect flaws.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To suppress a woods-shaped echo noise, by performing a deflecting scanning before and after an angle of incidence of longitudinal waves adapted to the characteristic of a welded part by electronic scan type ultrasonic flaw detecting method and focusing a beam to a flaw detection part to detect flaws. CONSTITUTION:A delay time controller 4 causes oscillators 1, which are selected by a program, to radiate ultrasonic waves at every prescribed repeat period in accordace with a delay time set in accordance with the transmission direction and the focusing distance of ultrasonic waves by a computer 5. A receiver 3 receives the signal of a selected oscillator by a command of the computer 5 and inputs this signal to a high-speed A-D converter 6. A start time of conversion is set by the signal of a delay controller 4, and the waveform made into a digital signal is inputted to a digital adder 7, and waveforms of selected m-number oscillators are added digitally. By this constitution, the ultrasonic wave transmission and receiving directions and ultrasonic wave focusing distance are changed on occasion to detect flaws, and the sectional image in a material to be checked is displayed on a cathode-ray tube by a picture display equipment 8.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used an acoustic couplant agent to change the shape of a probe by injecting the couplant into the case of a vibrator and using an arm to incline the probe from the inside to the outside of the case.
Abstract: PURPOSE:To practice highly accurate, three-diamensional flaw detection over a wide range without moving a probe by carrying out electronic scanning flaw detection while inclining a vibrator from time to time CONSTITUTION:A probe 1 mainly comprises a vibrator 2, a case 3 and an acoustic couplant agent 4 One end of a supporting rod 10 is attached to the end portion of the vibrator 2, while the other end of the supporting rod 10 is engaged with a circular arc guide groove 11 made in the inside surface of the case 3 The guide groove 11 is used to cause a coating material 7 on the vibrator 2 to face the surface of the probe 12 at all times A flexible material is employed to make the surface of the probe 12, so that its shape can be changed in a convex form by the injection of the couplant 4 In addition, an arm 13 is fed to the outside of the case so that the direction of the vibrator 2 can be freely inclined from a vibrator case 8 By operating the arm 13 to incline the probe 1 and to deflect it from the center F, ultrasonic beams are allowed to penetrate into the material
