In this work, a new metamaterial design is proposed to yield an ultra-thin and dual band metamaterials perfect absorber (MPA) to be operated in the frequency range from 15 to 35 THz. The proposed structure is consisted of a copper resonator deposited on a very thin Zinc Selenide ZnSe (0.6 μm) substrate, where the backside of the structure is covered with a metal plate to block the transmission of electromagnetic waves. Computer Simulation Technology (CST) was used to design and investigate the proposed structure. The absorption response of the proposed structure was found to be high enough with absorptivity of 98.44 and 99.28 at 22.46 THz and 28.95 THz, respectively. Results showed that the absorber is insensitive to the incident angle of 0°–60° in both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes, respectively. The MPA was seen to be highly independent on the angles of polarization of the incident waves. The working mechanism of the proposed design was revealed by multiple reflection interference theory and a good agreement was confirmed between the calculated and simulated results. The proposed design can be used for possible applications of stealth technology and imaging.

An ultrathin and dual band metamaterial perfect absorber based on ZnSe for the polarization-independent in terahertz range

New compact six-band metamaterial absorber based on Closed Circular Ring Resonator (CCRR) for Radar applications

In this research work, a symmetrical four-capacitance loaded complementary circular split ring resonator is proposed, which uses an ultra-thin Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) substrate to realize a low-profile triple-band metamaterial (MTM) perfect absorber for application in the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The electromagnetic properties of the proposed structure were calculated and investigated using the Finite Integration Technique (FIT). The proposed structure exhibited three highly absorptive (nearly perfect) peaks at the resonance frequencies of 15.68 THz, 37.48 THz, and 39.55 THz. Furthermore, the absorber was found to be insensitive to the polarization and incident wave angles, due to its symmetrical design. The effects of the conductor type, substrate thickness, unit cell dimension, resonator gap, and substrate type on the reflection and absorption spectra were investigated. To validate the numerical results, the proposed design was analyzed using High-Frequency Simulation Software (HFSS) and Advanced Design System (ADS). The surface current, electric field, and magnetic field distributions at the three-resonance frequency were analyzed. It was concluded that the overall performance of the proposed MTM structure was superior compared to those reported in the literature. The proposed design could be a good candidate for application in stealth technology, imaging, and thermal energy harvesting.

A Symmetrical Terahertz Triple-Band Metamaterial Absorber Using a Four-Capacitance Loaded Complementary Circular Split Ring Resonator and an Ultra-Thin ZnSe Substrate

In this paper, a polarization-independent perfect absorber with near-zero index metamaterial (NZIM) property is proposed. Conventional FR4 substrate without any lumped or substrate-embedded elements has been used with a unique patch of the swastika-shaped capacitive gap along with inductive tails at 90-degree rotational symmetry. The simulation results for both the unit cell and the array for co-polarized waves at normal and oblique incidences up to 90° has shown near unity absorptions at 4.238, 7.836, 10.482, 11.014 and 13.352 GHz along with near zero values of permittivity, permeability, and refractive index. The cross-polarization analysis has proved its perfect absorption capability. The absorber has shown 14 GHz of near-zero refractive index at the entire operating frequency range. The equivalent circuit analysis and measurement of both the array and the unit cell were in good agreement with simulation results, which proved it as a perfect NZIM absorber to enhance antenna gain and directivity and other sensing applications at C, X and Ku band.

Polarization-independent perfect metamaterial absorber for C, X and, Ku band applications

Broadband electromagnetic (EM) wave absorbers are persistently desired in the past decades due to their extensive applications in different fields. In this paper, we proposed and demonstrated a metamaterial absorber (MA) based on a hybrid structure of stereo and planar resistive metamaterial elements. In principle, this hybrid MA is a combination of the Dallenbach layer absorber and circuit analog (CA) absorber. By adjusting its dispersion feature, the stereo metamaterial based on standing resistive patch can work as a broadband artificial Dallenbach layer absorber for C, X and Ku bands. Such stereo metamaterial was also utilized as a dispersive dielectric spacer and a metasurface consisting of resistive circle rings was deployed on the top of it to implement an improved CA absorber for S and C bands. By combing them together, the proposed hybrid MA can achieve absorption over 90% in an ultra-broad bandwidth from S to Ku band (2.59–16.80 GHz). Since our design takes full advantage of the physical space, the hybrid MA achieves an actual thickness as only 1.075 times of the ultimate thickness corresponding to its absorption performance. Furthermore, the hybrid MA has comprehensive advantages in terms of stability against oblique incidence, easy processing and light-weight. The MA prototype was fabricated assisted by the silk screen printing process and its ultra-broadband absorption performance was experimentally validated by the measured results. The new concept of hybrid MA and specific design scheme proposed here provide a promising approach for broadband, low-profile and light weight EM absorber.

An ultra-broadband microwave absorber based on hybrid structure of stereo metamaterial and planar metasurface for the S, C, X and Ku bands

Improvement in the antenna gain is usually achieved at the expense of bandwidth and vice versa. This is where the realization of this enhancement can be made through compromising the antenna profile. In this work, we propose a new design of incorporating periodic metasurface array to enhance the bandwidth and gain while keeping the antenna to a low-profile scheme. The proposed antenna was simulated and fabricated in order to validate the results in the operating frequency range from 10 MHz to 43.5 GHz. Computer simulation technology (CST) microwave studio software was used to design and simulate the proposed antenna, while LPKF prototyping PCB machine was utilized to fabricate the antenna. Results showed that the antenna generated a gain and bandwidth of 14.2 dB and 2.13 GHz, respectively. Following the good agreement between the numerical and measurement results, it is believed that the proposed antenna can be potentially attractive for the application of satellite communications in Ku-band electromagnetic wave.
