The Generation R Study is a population-based prospective cohort study from fetal life until young adulthood. The study is designed to identify early environmental and genetic causes of normal and abnormal growth, development and health during fetal life, childhood and adulthood. The study focuses on four primary areas of research: (1) growth and physical development; (2) behavioural and cognitive development; (3) diseases in childhood; and (4) health and healthcare for pregnant women and children. In total, 9,778 mothers with a delivery date from April 2002 until January 2006 were enrolled in the study. General follow-up rates until the age of 4 years exceed 75%. Data collection in mothers, fathers and preschool children included questionnaires, detailed physical and ultrasound examinations, behavioural observations, and biological samples. A genome wide association screen is available in the participating children. Regular detailed hands on assessment are performed from the age of 5 years onwards. Eventually, results forthcoming from the Generation R Study have to contribute to the development of strategies for optimizing health and healthcare for pregnant women and children.

Background and aims Problem gambling has been identified as an emergent public health issue, and there is a need to identify gambling trends and to regularly update worldwide gambling prevalence rates This paper aims to review recent research on adult gambling and problem gambling (since 2000) and then, in the context of a growing liberalization of the gambling market in the European Union, intends to provide a more detailed analysis of adult gambling behavior across European countries Methods A systematic literature search was carried out using academic databases, Internet, and governmental websites Results Following this search and utilizing exclusion criteria, 69 studies on adult gambling prevalence were identified These studies demonstrated that there are wide variations in past-year problem gambling rates across different countries in the world (012-58%) and in Europe (012-34%) However, it is difficult to directly compare studies due to different methodological procedures, instruments, cut-offs, and time frames Despite the variability among instruments, some consistent results with regard to demographics were found Discussion and conclusion The findings highlight the need for continuous monitoring of problem gambling prevalence rates in order to examine the influence of cultural context on gambling patterns, assess the effectiveness of policies on gambling-related harms, and establish priorities for future research

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan ylipainon ja talouden tilan valista yhteytta Suomessa vuosina 1978-2002 kayttaen mikroaineistoa. Tulosten mukaan alueen tyollisyysasteen nousu johtaa vaeston liikalihavuuden vahenemiseen. Vaikutus syntyy huomattavasti ylipainoisten (BMI-indeksi > 35) painon vahenemisesta. Lisaksi vaikutus on suurempi myohemmassa keski-iassa oleville (46-65-vuotiaat). Ylipainon yleisyys on riippumaton alueen talouskasvusta. Suomea koskevat tulokset eivat ole sopusoinnussa Ruhmin (2000, 2003, 2004) Yhdysvalloille raportoimien havaintojen kanssa, joiden mukaan tilapaiset taantumat talouskasvussa ovat hyvaksi ihmisten terveydelle. Does a slump really make you thinner? Finnish micro‐level evidence 1978–2002

Survey respondents and non-respondents differ in their demographic and socio-economic position. Many of the health behaviours are also known to be associated with socio-economic differences. We aimed to investigate how much of the excess mortality of survey non-respondents can be explained by the socio-economic differences between respondents and non-respondents. Questionnaire-based adult health behaviour surveys have been conducted in Finland annually since 1978. Data from the 1978 to 2002 surveys, including non-respondents, were linked with mortality data from the Finnish National Cause of Death statistics and with demographic and socio-economic register data (marital status, education and household income) obtained from Statistics Finland. The mortality follow-up lasted until 2006, in which period there were 12,762 deaths (7,994 in men and 4,768 in women) during the follow-up. Total and cause-specific mortality were higher among non-respondents in both men and women. Adjusting results for marital status, educational level and average household income decreased the excess total and cause-specific mortality of non-respondents in both men and women. Of the total excess mortality of non-respondents, 41% in men and 20% in women can be accounted for demographic and socio-economic factors. A part of the excess mortality among non-respondents can be accounted for their demographic and socio-economic characteristics. Based on these results we can assume that non-respondents tend to have more severe health problems, acute illnesses and unhealthy behaviours, such as smoking and excess alcohol use. These can be reasons for persons not taking part in population surveys.
