An adaptive interface for a programmable system, for predicting a desired user function, based on user history, as well as machine internal status and context. The apparatus receives an input from the user and other data. A predicted input is presented for confirmation by the user, and the predictive mechanism is updated based on this feedback. Also provided is a pattern recognition system for a multimedia device, wherein a user input is matched to a video stream on a conceptual basis, allowing inexact programming of a multimedia device. The system analyzes a data stream for correspondence with a data pattern for processing and storage. The data stream is subjected to adaptive pattern recognition to extract features of interest to provide a highly compressed representation that may be efficiently processed to determine correspondence. Applications of the interface and system include a video cassette recorder (VCR), medical device, vehicle control system, audio device, environmental control system, securities trading terminal, and smart house. The system optionally includes an actuator for effecting the environment of operation, allowing closed-loop feedback operation and automated learning.

A method and apparatus for fingerprint recognition is provided. A fingerprint is detected on a sensor. The fingerprint is digitized. A digitized background is subtracted from the fingerprint, resulting in a difference print. The difference print is matched with a database of fingerprint templates.

Fingerprint recognition system

A method and apparatus for verification of personnel identity by correlation of fingerprint images. The method includes the steps of: first enrolling a person by the steps of forming a reference image of a fingerprint of the person, identifying a plurality of reference sections within the reference image, where the image data contained in each of the reference sections is distinct relative to the image data adjacent to and surrounding the reference section, and saving the image data of each of the reference sections; and then verifying the identity of someone claiming to be an enrolled person by the steps of retrieving the image data of the reference sections of the enrolled person, forming a verify image of the fingerprint of the person claiming to be enrolled, where the verify image includes a plurality of verify regions each corresponding in position to one of the reference sections and each larger in extent than its corresponding reference section, determining a best-match location within each verify region at which the image data is most similar to the image data of its corresponding reference section, and verifying the identity of the person claiming to be enrolled according to the degree of similarity between the image data of the best-match locations and the corresponding reference sections and according to the degree of similarity between the relative positioning of the best-match locations and the corresponding reference sections.

Method and apparatus for verifying identity using image correlation

A method of and system for rendering a halftone image of a gray scale image by utilizing a pixel-by-pixel comparison of the gray scale image against a blue noise mask is disclosed in which the gray scale image is scanned on a pixel-by-pixel basis and compared on a pixel-by-pixel basis to an array of corresponding data points contained in a blue noise mask stored in a PROM or computer memory in order to produce the desired halftoned image. Both digital and optically implemented halftone methods are disclosed. Application specific modifications of the blue noise mask as well as its use for producing halftoned color images are also disclosed.

Method and apparatus for halftone rendering of a gray scale image using a blue noise mask

A gray scale image of a fingerprint composed of a field of 
pixels is converted to a binary image composed of a field of 
pixels by a technique which takes into account the directivity of 
the ridge and valley structure. Three intermediate binary im­
ages are developed, one by the use of a vertical filter, one by 
the use of a horizontal filter and a reference image by the use of 
a filter which is not directionally biased. Corresponding sub­
fields around each pixel in each of the three images are com­
pared. If the subfield for the vertically derived image is closer to 
that of the reference image then is the subfield for the horizon­
tally derived image, then the binary value for the pixel from the 
vertically derived image is used in the final image; and vice 
versa. In this fashion, a fourth a final binary image is derived 
from a combination of the vertically derived image and horizon­
tally derived image which includes the best imagery from each 
of those two intermediate images.
