TL;DR: In this article, a device with a touch-sensitive display may be unlocked via gestures performed on the touch sensitive display, if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device.
Abstract: A device with a touch-sensitive display may be unlocked via gestures performed on the touch-sensitive display. The device is unlocked if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device. The device displays one or more unlock images with respect to which the predefined gesture is to be performed in order to unlock the device. The performance of the predefined gesture with respect to the unlock image may include moving the unlock image to a predefined location and/or moving the unlock image along a predefined path. The device may also display visual cues of the predefined gesture on the touch screen to remind a user of the gesture.

TL;DR: In this paper, a context-aware voice guidance method is provided that interacts with other voice services of a user device, which does not provide audible guidance while the user is making a verbal request to any of the voice-activated services.
Abstract: A context-aware voice guidance method is provided that interacts with other voice services of a user device. The voice guidance does not provide audible guidance while the user is making a verbal request to any of the voice-activated services. Instead, the voice guidance transcribes its output on the screen while the verbal requests from the user are received. In some embodiments, the voice guidance only provides a short warning sound to get the user's attention while the user is speaking on a phone call or another voice-activated service is providing audible response to the user's inquires. The voice guidance in some embodiments distinguishes between music that can be ducked and spoken words, for example from an audiobook, that the user wants to pause instead of being skipped. The voice guidance ducks music but pauses spoken words of an audio book in order to provide voice guidance to the user.

TL;DR: In this article, the digital assistant displays a digital assistant object in an object region of a display screen and obtains at least one information item based on a speech input from a user.
Abstract: The digital assistant displays a digital assistant object in an object region of a display screen. The digital assistant then obtains at least one information item based on a speech input from a user. Upon determining that the at least one information item can be displayed in its entirety in the display region of the display screen, the digital assistant displays the at least one information item in the display region, where the display region and the object region are not visually distinguishable from one another. Upon determining that the at least one information item cannot be displayed in its entirety in the display region of the video display screen, the digital assistant displays a portion of the at least one information item in the display region, where the display region and the object region are visually distinguishable from one another.

TL;DR: In this paper, a user interface for a streaming media system can replicate aspects of broadcast media systems, where icons representing streaming media stations region can be arranged in a scrollable array, and a visual indicator presented to identify the current station's icon.
Abstract: User interfaces for a streaming media system can replicate aspects of broadcast media systems. Icons representing streaming media stations region can be arranged in a scrollable array, and a visual indicator presented to identify the current station's icon. Some or all of the station icons can be “dynamic” icons that virtually play tracks by updating artwork and/or progress indicators even when a different station is current. Information about previously played tracks can be presented in a history region adjacent to a region presenting information about a current track, and an animated transition can move the current track's information to the history region when the current track finishes playing.

TL;DR: In this article, a visual indicator is displayed on an icon associated with an application that was recently installed on a portable electronic device and the indicator may be removed after a user has interacted with the application in some meaningful way.
Abstract: Techniques for identifying recently installed applications on a portable electronic device facilitating locating newly installed applications on a mobile device are disclosed. A visual indicator may be displayed on an icon associated with an application that was recently installed on the portable electronic device. The visual indicator may be removed after a user has interacted with the application in some meaningful way. One or more applications are selected in an application store session for installation on a portable electronic device. After a selection of one or more applications, the application store session continues, and other applications may be selected, until an exit instruction is received. Upon the exit instruction, a home screen page containing at least one of the new applications is displayed.

TL;DR: In this paper, a computing device can be configured to automatically tum off notifications when generating a notification would cause a disturbance or be unwanted by a user, based on application data, such as calendar data, alarm clock data, map data, etc.
Abstract: In some implementations, a computing device can be configured to automatically tum off notifications when generating a notification would cause a disturbance or be unwanted by a user. The device can be configured with quiet hours during which notifications that would otherwise be generated by the computing device can be suppressed. In some implementations, quiet hours can be configured as a time period with a start time and an end time. In some implementations, quiet hours can be derived from application data. For example, calendar data, alarm clock data, map data, etc. can be used to determine when quiet hours should be enforced. In some implementations, the device can be configured with exceptions to quiet hour notification suppression. In some implementations, the user can identify contacts to which the quiet hours notification suppression should not be applied.

TL;DR: In this article, a unique input mechanism for controlling several operations of an electronic device is provided, which may be a single input mechanism or a combination of user inputs to the electronic device.
Abstract: A unique input mechanism for controlling several operations of an electronic device is provided. Using the unique input mechanism, which may be the single input mechanism for providing user inputs to the electronic device, a user may provide different inputs or combinations of inputs to control different operations based on the current mode or capacity of the electronic device. For example, a single, short click of a button may control a media operation (e.g., play/pause) in a media mode, and the same input may control a telephony operation (e.g., initiate/terminate call) in a telephony mode. In some embodiments, different inputs may be associated with different types of operations. The unique input mechanism may include, for example, a button, a switch, a key, or an actuator.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors proposed a method in which a portable electronic device displays an array of thumbnail images corresponding to a set of photographic images and then replaces the displayed array with a user-selected photographic image upon detecting a user contact with a corresponding thumbnail image in the array.
Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide portable electronic devices, and particularly, portable devices for photo management, such as digital photographing, photo manipulation, and e-mailing photos.SOLUTION: The invention relates to a computer-implemented method in which a portable electronic device displays an array of thumbnail images corresponding to a set of photographic images. The device replaces the displayed array of thumbnail images with a user-selected photographic image upon detecting a user contact with a corresponding thumbnail image in the array. The user-selected photographic image is displayed at a larger scale than the corresponding thumbnail image. The portable device displays a different photographic image in replacement of the user-selected photographic image in accordance with a scrolling gesture. The scrolling gesture comprises a substantially horizontal movement of a user contact with the touch screen display.
