Course Description In this course, we will explore the question of the actual and potential connections between democracy and education. Our focus of attention will be placed on a critical examination of democratic theory and its implications for the civic education roles and contributions of teachers, adult educators, community development practitioners, and community organizers. We will survey and deal critically with a range of competing conceptions of democracy, variously described as classical, republican, liberal, radical, marxist, neomarxist, pragmatist, feminist, populist, pluralist, postmodern, and/or participatory. Using narrative inquiry as a means for illuminating and interpreting contemporary practice, we will analyze the implications of different conceptions of democracy for the practical work of civic education.

The interactions learners have with each other build interpersonal skills, such as listening, politely interrupting, expressing ideas, raising questions, disagreeing, paraphrasing, negotiating, and asking for help. 2. Interdependence. Learners must depend on one another to accomplish a common objective. Each group member has specific tasks to complete, and successful completion of each member’s tasks results in attaining the overall group objective.

Project-based learning taps into students' interests by allowing them to create projects that result in meaningful learning experiences. The method requires teachers to identify projects that challenge students to work individually or in groups to create plans, solve problems they encounter, test their ideas, and present their projects to peers. The article shares lessons learned in a mainstream middle school that in collaboration with the authors developed and implemented project-based learning. The effectiveness of the implementation was assessed by analyzing teacher acceptance and student engagement. The approach presented teachers with a unique set of problems involving time, fairness, and control; however, the authors concluded that teachers accepted the project-based learning teaching approach and that students were highly engaged in the process.

Philosophical issues in adventure education

This study examined whether life skills could be developed in a Project Based Learning (PBL) course. The participants were students enrolled in a graduate level PBL course. The same 35-question survey was given to students at the beginning and end of the course, and students were asked to rank their life skills using a Likert scale. Additionally, we interviewed three students in order to capture some of the student’s views on the use of PBL. A paired sample t – test revealed that there was no significant difference from survey 1 to survey 2 in time management, collaboration, and work ethic; but there was a significant difference from survey 1 to survey 2 in responsibility, problem solving, self-direction, communication, and creativity. However, on average all life skills showed an increase. The interviews also indicated that PBL allowed students to practice and develop life skills.

Enhancing College Students' Life Skills through Project Based Learning.

Experiential learning is popular with students as it is considered more enjoyable and leads to deeper learning when compared to didactic approaches. Employers prefer hiring students who have learned experientially and yet emerging research indicates that the use of experiential learning in higher education institutions remains limited. This research surveyed faculty on their use of and views regarding experiential learning across US institutions focusing on undergraduate teaching. Findings indicated that dominant obstacles to using experiential approaches were classroom structure, class size is too large, not enough time, dif cult to cover all the curriculum, and faculty resistance. Findings and their implications for practice and future research are discussed.
