Fabricating protein adsorbents with high adsorption capacity and appreciable throughput is extremely important and highly desired for the separation and purification of protein products in the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries, yet still remains a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of a novel protein adsorbent by in situ functionalizing eletrospun ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) nanofibrous membranes (NFM) with critic acid (CCA). Taking advantage of the merits of large specific surface area, highly tortuous open-porous structure, abundant active carboxyl groups introduced by CCA, superior chemical stability, and robust mechanical strength, the obtained CCA-grafted EVOH NFM (EVOH–CCA NFM) present an excellent integrated protein (take lysozyme as the model protein) adsorption performance with a high capacity of 284 mg g–1, short equilibrium time of 6 h, ease of elution, and good reusability. Investigating natural rubber composition with Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy: A rapid and non-destructive method to determine both protein and lipid contents simultaneously

The insoluble (macrogel) and soluble fractions of 11 commercial natural rubber (NR) samples (Technically specified rubber) were separated. Nitrogen titrations and lipid extractions enabled a quantitative assessment of the proteins and extractable lipids in each fraction. Swelling was measured in tetrahydrofuran in order to evaluate the crosslink density (Mc –1) of each macrogel. While the soluble fraction had a high lipid concentration, the majority of non-isoprene compounds of the macrogel were found to be proteins, which accounted for 4.6 to 50.8% (w/w) of the macrogel. Indeed, the macrogels contained less than 0.5% (w/w) extractable lipids. However, our results showed that the soluble fraction contained large quantities of proteins (16–66% of the nitrogen content of the raw NR sample), probably structuring microaggregates. An exponential correlation (R2 > 0.96) was found between the crosslink density and the protein concentration of macrogel, suggesting that proteins are involved in the majority of crosslinks in macrogel. Characterisation of macrogel composition from industrial natural rubber samples: Influence of proteins on the macrogel crosslink density

The mineral composition of the insoluble (macrogel) and soluble fractions of two natural rubber (NR) samples made from the latex of two different clones (RRIM600 from Thailand and GT1 from Cote d'Ivoire) was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The ICP-MS results showed that mineral elements were concentrated in the macrogel. The major mineral elements found in macrogel were phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, and sulfur. Some mineral elements were mostly concentrated in micron-sized mineral aggregates, visible at the surface of the samples using scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyzer (SEM/EDX). The nature of these mineral aggregates was found to be highly variable. Their inhomogeneous distribution in the macrogel indicates that these aggregates do not have a major influence on macrogel structure. (Resume d'auteur)
