Diverse applications in vehicular network present specific requirements and challenges on wireless access technology. Although considered as the first standard, IEEE 802.11p shows the obvious drawbacks and is still in the field-trial stage. In this paper, we propose long-term evolution (LTE)-V as a systematic and integrated V2X solution based on time-division LTE (TD-LTE) 4G. LTE-V includes two modes: 1) LTE-V-direct and 2) LTE-V-cell. Comparing to IEEE 802.11p, LTE-V-direct is a new decentralized architecture which modifies TD-LTE physical layer and try to keep commonality as possible to provide short range direct communication, low latency, and high reliability improvements. By leveraging the centralized architecture with native features of TD-LTE, LTE-V-cell optimizes radio resource management for better supporting V2I. LTE-V-direct and LTE-V-cell coordinate with each other to provide an integrated V2X solution. Performance simulations based on sufficient scenarios and the prototype system with typical cases are presented. Finally, future works of LTE-V are envisioned.

LTE-V: A TD-LTE-Based V2X Solution for Future Vehicular Network

Various wireless communication systems exist, which enable a wide range of applications and use cases in the vehicular environment. These applications can be grouped into three types, namely, road safety, traffic efficiency, and infotainment, each with its own set of functional and performance requirements. In pursuance of assisting drivers to travel safely and comfortably, several of these requirements have to be met simultaneously. While the coexistence of multiple radio access technologies brings immense opportunities towards meeting most of the vehicular networking application requirements, it is equally important and challenging to identify the strength and weaknesses of each technology and understand which technology is more suitable for the given networking scenario. In this paper, we evaluate two of the most viable communication standards, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.11p and long-term evolution (LTE) by 3rd Generation Partnership Project for vehicular networking. A detailed performance evaluation study of the standards is given for a variety of parameter settings such as beacon transmission frequency, vehicle density, and vehicle average speed. Both standards are compared in terms of delay, reliability, scalability, and mobility support in the context of various application requirements. Furthermore, through extensive simulation-based study, we validated the effectiveness of both standards to handle different application requirements and share insight for further research directions. The results indicate that IEEE 802.11p offers acceptable performance for sparse network topologies with limited mobility support. On the other hand, LTE meets most of the application requirements in terms of reliability, scalability, and mobility support; however, it is challenging to obtain stringent delay requirements in the presence of higher cellular network traffic load.

LTE and IEEE 802.11p for vehicular networking: a performance evaluation

As we edge closer to the broad implementation of intelligent transportation systems, the need to extend the perceptual bounds of sensor-equipped vehicles beyond the individual vehicle is more pressing than ever. Research and standardization efforts toward vehicle to everything (V2X), technology is intended to enable the communication of individual vehicles with both one another and supporting road infrastructure. The topic has drawn interest from a large number of stakeholders, from governmental authorities to automotive manufacturers and mobile network operators. With interest sourced from many disparate parties and a wealth of research on a large number of topics, trying to grasp the bigger picture of V2X development can be a daunting task. In this tutorial survey, to the best of our knowledge, we collate research across a number of topics in V2X, from historical developments to standardization activities and a high-level view of research in a number of important fields. In so doing, we hope to provide a useful reference for the state of V2X research and development for newcomers and veterans alike.

V2X Access Technologies: Regulation, Research, and Remaining Challenges

Autonomous vehicle (AV) technology can provide a safe and convenient transportation solution for the public, but the complex and various environments in the real world make it difficult to operate safely and reliably. A connected autonomous vehicle (CAV) is an AV with vehicle connectivity capability, which enhances the situational awareness of the AV and enables the cooperation between AVs. Hence, CAV technology can enhance the capabilities and robustness of AV to be a promising transportation solution in the future. This paper introduces a representative architecture of CAVs and surveys the latest research advances, methods, and algorithms for sensing, perception, planning, and control of CAVs. It reviews the state-of-the-art and state-of-the-practice (when applicable) of a multi-layer Perception-Planning-Control architecture including on-board sensors and vehicular communications, the methods of sensor fusion and localization and mapping in the perception layer, the algorithms of decision making and trajectory planning in the planning layer, and the control strategies of trajectory tracking in the control layer. Furthermore, the implementations and impact of vehicle connectivity and the corresponding consequential challenges of cooperative perception, complex connected decision making, and multi-vehicle controls are summarized and their significant research issues enumerated. Most importantly, the critical review in this paper provides a list and discussion of the remaining challenges and unsolved problems of CAVs in each Section which would be helpful to researchers in the field. The comprehensive coverage of this paper makes it particularly useful to academic researchers, practitioners, and students alike.

Research Advances and Challenges of Autonomous and Connected Ground Vehicles

Device-to-device (D2D) is increasingly becoming a prominent technology within the 5G story, portrayed as a means of offloading traffic from the core network. The ever increasing demand for vehicular traffic consumption is providing the impetus for a new architectural design that can harness the benefits of D2D for vehicular users, taking a step toward offloading vehicular traffic from the core network. We propose the notion of extending D2D for vehicular scenarios with the potential to coordinate vehicular traffic using the LTE band. Furthermore, we then extend this approach by investigating cognitive radio in synergy with a geo-location database, to exploit white spaces as a means of further offloading vehicular users. Our simulation results have shown that our approach can outperform the legacy IEEE 802.11p in terms of delay.

Cognitive vehicular communication for 5G

Advanced Driving Assistance Systems (ADAS) for improving vehicular safety are increasingly network based, with approaches that use vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) communication. Most current proposals for V2V and V2I use DSRC and a dedicated infrastructure of road side units (RSUs) for the V2I scenarios. Here, the technical feasibility of an alternative architecture is explored, one that uses a combination of LTE cellular networks and servers near the edge of the LTE network. Compared with approaches based on DSRC and RSUs, this architecture exploits an infrastructure that is already largely deployed, but requires that technical challenges related to latency and scalability be addressed. This paper outlines an architecture that addresses these challenges and shows experimental results that demonstrate its effectiveness for vehicular safety applications. The approach combines resources near the network edge with broadcast-based data distribution to provide data freshness guarantees comparable to what can be achieved with DSRC for many applications. Experiments from the deployed LTE network and NS-3 simulations demonstrate that this approach is feasible, and show the benefits and limitations of the architecture.
