Study explored high voltage electrical discharge (HVED) for recovery of bioactive compounds from Dalmatian sage. HVED parameters were: treatment time (3, 9 min), ethanol content (0, 25, 50%, v/v), voltage for argon (15, 20 kV) and nitrogen (20, 25 kV). Findings were compared to conventional extraction (CE) with assessment of total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (EPR), NIR spectroscopy, colorimetric parameters, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Raw sage was analyzed for pesticide residues and heavy metals. The optimal HVED extraction expressed as TPC 57.21 mg GAE/g was obtained with nitrogen/9 min/25 kV/33% of ethanol. Sage is safe for extraction in terms of pesticide residues and heavy metals. HVED electroporation facilitated the extraction of bioactive compounds and produced extracts with high antioxidant potential, thus confirmed HVED as “green” extraction for sustainable functional food production.

Valorization of sage extracts (Salvia officinalis L.) obtained by high voltage electrical discharges: Process control and antioxidant properties

Objectives The aim of this study was to determine the levels of Pb, Cd, and OTA in frequently used medicinal plants. Materials and methods Twenty-one samples of linden, chamomile, and sage were obtained during the spring and summer period of 2016 from local markets and traditional bazaars in Istanbul, Turkey. Microwave-assisted digestion was applied for the preparation of the samples and the ICP-OES was used for the determination of Pb and Cd. Determination of OTA was performed using HPLC-FLD after immunoaffinity column clean-up. Results OTA was detected in only one chamomile sample with a low concentration level of 0.034 µg/kg. According to the results of ICP-OES analysis, Pb in the concentration range of 4.125-6.487 mg/kg, 3.123-5.769 mg/kg and 3.229-5.985 mg/kg and Cd in the concentration range of 0.324-0.524 mg/kg, 0.365-0.51 mg/kg and 0.321-0.474 mg/kg was found in linden, chamomile, and sage teas, respectively. Conclusion We indicated that levels of Pb and OTA were found below the maximum permissible level whereas high levels of Cd were observed in medicinal plants, which may not pose a health risk for consumers according to the exposure assessment. However, it is suggested that other mycotoxins and heavy metal contents should be carefully considered in medicinal plants.

In this study, multi-shaped CdS was synthesized by hydro- and solvothermal methods. Interestingly, the results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that branch-like CdS could be transformed into ball-like and flake-like in deionized water by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid and l-cysteine, respectively, and the growth mechanism of CdS was discussed and explored: the ion-binding rate might be the main factor for the morphology transformation of CdS. X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive spectroscopy revealed branch-like CdS which exhibited the hexagonal phase. Besides, the optical characteristics of CdS were performed by ultraviolet–visible and photoluminescence spectrum. Also, CdS was utilized to explore the photocatalytic activity of rhodamine B, and the result showed that the photocatalytic activity of ball-like CdS was higher than flake-like and branch-like CdS.

In this study, a potentiometric titration technique has been used to determine stability constants for the various complexes of Zn(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) with creatinine and two amino acids. Stability constants of ternary systems have been evaluated by the method suggested by Irving-Rossotti at 25°C and 0.11M ionic strength (kept constant with NaC104) in aqueous solution. In addition, the conditional con­ stants were calculated as a function of pH. The maximum values of the conditional formation constants were found to be in accordance with the mixed-ligand complex formation constants in a given pH region. In addition, the mole fractions of different species from mixed complexes were calculated by means of formation constants. Bu calismada isoniazid ve iki aminoasitin bakir(II) ve cinko(II) metalleri ile olusturdugu karisik kompleks olusum dengeleri Irving Rossotti metodu ile potansiyometrik olarak tayin edildi. Uclu komplekslerin stabilite sabitleri Irving Rossotti yontemi ile 25±0.1 oC de ve iyonik kuvvet (0.11M) NaClO4 ile sabit tutularak sulu cozeltide incelendi. 25 oC de karisik ligand komplekslerin olusum sabitleri; Cu(II)-isoniazid-L-asparajin logK= 7.29; Zn(II)-isoniazid-L-asparajin logK= 4.09; Cu(II)-isoniazid-L-glutamik asit logK= 6.70; Zn(II)-isoniazid-L-glutamik asit logK= 6.30 olarak bulundu. Olusan komplekslerin kosullu olusum sabitleri pH’a bagli olarak hesaplandi ve belirli bir pH bolgesinde kosullu olusum sabitinin maksimum oldugu degerin deneysel olarak bulunan kararlilik sabiti ile uyum icinde oldugu gozlendi. Ayrica karisik kompleksten tureyen turlerin bagil bolluklari olusum sabitlerinden hesaplandi.
