Design explorations of performance driven geometry in architectural design using parametric modeling and genetic algorithms

Engineering changes are inevitable and might propagate within and across multiple boundaries. Their management has increasingly become relevant within the interdisciplinary field of systems engineering. A few literature categorization frameworks arising from literature reviews have been proposed to structure the research field of engineering change management. However, the literature reviews are limited in scope, and the existing categorization frameworks do not provide sufficient coverage of the research field in its broader context. This paper addresses both shortcomings. First, a new, holistic and process-oriented literature categorization framework is proposed. Second, this proposed framework is used to categorize a comprehensive list of 427 publications in engineering change management. This categorization highlights not only research areas which have gained much attention, but also those where little research has been done. Third, a citation analysis is conducted which reveals the links between the publications and indicates the most cited publications. The result of this paper will help researchers and managers to (1) navigate through the state of the art in engineering change management, (2) position their work in the overall picture of engineering change management, (3) focus on the identified research gaps and weak points, and (4) search for further research and improvement opportunities. ©2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A Holistic Categorization Framework for Literature on Engineering Change Management

The evaluation process of conceptual design alternatives is a critical point for companies which operate in fast-growing markets due to its influence on all subsequent phases with regard to cost, quality and performance of the end-product. While various methods exist that are able to successfully carry out this difficult and time-consuming process, many have drawbacks (e.g., inability to consider coupled decision, inability to incorporate uncertainty, etc). The growing number of articles on concept selection literature is an indication of the importance of effective design strategy and of its role in improving the competitiveness of an organisation. Accordingly, this paper surveys concept selection methods (CSMs) published between 1980 and 2008. Our overall goal is to provide designers and decision-makers with an overview of the underlying principles used in the reviewed methods along with the advantages and limitations.

Concept selection methods – a literature review from 1980 to 2008

Multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) methods can help designers address the choosing problem in building detailed design. Many, however, appear to assume that all methods are equivalent. This paper argues that differences between MCDM methods matter. The first contribution of this paper is differentiating between the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and choosing by advantages (CBA) by comparing them through an example. The second contribution is explaining why CBA is superior to AHP for this context. The evaluation of design concepts is one of the critical phases of the product development process due to its influence on all subsequent phases with regards to cost, quality and performance of the end-product. This paper presents a new Concept Selection Method (CSM), which utilizes Fuzzy Information Axiom (FIA), and demonstrates its application on a case study. The un-weighted Axiomatic Design approach developed in this work includes both crisp and fuzzy criteria. FIA has the capability to solve multi-criteria decision-making problems, and is particularly useful for overcoming vague and multi-criteria structure of the concept evaluation problem. The selection process has been aided by developing a code in MATLAB, which carries out both crisp and fuzzy calculations, to select the best possible concepts.

Fuzzy Information Axiom Approach for Design Concept Evaluation

While many approaches have been proposed to optimize the product family design for measures of cost, revenue and performance, many of these approaches fail to incorporate the complexity of the manufacturing issues into family design decision-making. One of these issues is assembly sequencing. This paper presents a simulation study by which the impact of assembly sequencing on the product family design outcomes is investigated. Overall, the results indicate that when the product family design takes into account the assembly sequencing decisions, the outcomes at the shop floor level improve. The results have implications for companies that are looking into increasing their revenue without increasing their investment in the shop floor.Copyright © 2007 by ASME
