
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of leadership styles in the hospitality industry. It also demonstrates theories used in hospitality leadership styles research, identifies the main outcomes and highlights gaps for future research.


Design/methodology/approach
This paper presents a comprehensive review of the 79 articles on leadership styles in the hospitality context spanning over 13 years (2008–2020) and extends the scope in distinctive means.


Findings
This review has demonstrated that leadership styles research in hospitality has made progress in the past 13 years; however, there are conceptual and empirical overlaps among different leadership styles in hospitality. There is a lack of research on antecedents and integrating theories in studies. This review has revealed that several leadership styles have not been rigorously examined in hospitality research with their outcomes.


Research limitations/implications
The search strategy used to find articles published in Web of Science about leadership styles in hospitality was restricted to title to boost the accuracy of the subsequent literature.


Practical implications
By following the guidance presented in this review, the authors expect to advance and maintain hospitality leadership research to provide substantive insights into the context of hospitality leadership over the coming years.


Originality/value
To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is one of the first to undertake a comprehensive understanding of various leadership styles in the hospitality context. This study provides a comprehensive projected research agenda to demonstrate theoretical discourses and empirical research. Overall, this critical review presents a holistic idea of the focus of the prior studies and what should be highlighted in future studies.

This research utilizes the conservation of resources (COR) theory to examine the effect of supervisor-subordinate guanxi on the emotional exhaustion of the Thai subordinates working under Chinese supervisors at Chinese subsidiaries in Thailand. Specifically, this study examines the role of supervisor job autonomy and workload as moderators of supervisor-subordinate guanxi on subordinates' emotional exhaustion. Survey data were obtained from 201 dyads comprised of Chinese supervisors and their Thai subordinates at the subsidiaries of a Chinese multinational enterprise in Rayong, Thailand. A partial least squares structural equation model was used for data analysis. The analysis significantly supports the negative association between supervisor-subordinate guanxi effects on the emotional exhaustion of Thai subordinates. The effect of supervisor-subordinate guanxi is positively moderated by the Chinese supervisors' level of job autonomy. However, it is negatively moderated by the level of workload generally experienced by Thai subordinates at this organization. Findings support and advance previous research, illustrating that not every group of employees will benefit from guanxi equally; whether an employee benefits from guanxi depends on the supervisor's authority and the levels of workload.

Supervisor-subordinate guanxi and emotional exhaustion: The moderating effect of supervisor job autonomy and workload levels in organizations

The study aims to examine the impact of transformational leadership (TL) on employee civic virtue behavior (CVB) by applying social exchange theory. Inconsistent findings from previous studies suggest that the mechanism through which TL contributes to employee’s citizenship behaviors is not simple and goes beyond a direct causal relationship. Therefore, the present study introduces two mediators, namely, thriving and emotional exhaustion, to explain the connection between TL and CVB, thus contributing to the literature on civic virtue and leadership. This quantitative study uses a time-lag approach to collect data in two waves at a time interval of three months. The final sample consists of 374 respondents, including employees and their supervisors working in 12 hotels situated in different tourist places in Anhui province of China. Results indicate that TL has a positive impact on CVB. Moreover, emotional exhaustion significantly mediates the link between TL and CVB. Surprisingly, the mediating effect of employee thriving is insignificant in the association between TL and CVB. This research suggests that developing and nurturing a transformational role between managers/supervisors can help in enhancing employees’ CVB. Similarly, transformational leaders can reduce employee emotional exhaustion by strengthening employee citizenship behavior. In this regard, different practical measures (i.e., mindfulness training courses) can be arranged to enhance the emotionally centered self-regulation of employees.
