Adaptations of Migratory Shorebirds to Highly Saline and Alkaline Lakes: Wilson’s Phalarope and American Avocet
Sheila A. Mahoney,Joseph R. Jehl +1 more
TL;DR: Through a combination of behavioral and anatomical adaptations, phalaropes and avocets evidently are able to rid their prey of most adherent lake water and thereby largely avoid the problems of salt-loading and the ingestion of harmful ions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Relationships of avian cecal lengths to food habits, taxonomic position, and intestinal lengths
TL;DR: It is postulate that the relatively well-developed ceca in some non-herbivorous birds are associated with conservation of critical resources such as water and nitrogen.
Journal ArticleDOI
Avoidance of Salt-Loading by a Diving Bird at a Hypersaline and Alkaline Lake: Eared Grebe
Sheila A. Mahoney,Joseph R. Jehl +1 more
Journal ArticleDOI
Physiological ecology and salt loading of California gulls at an alkaline, hypersaline lake
Sheila A. Mahoney,Joseph R. Jehl +1 more
TL;DR: It is likely that gulls that are adapted to hypersaline lakes do not require fresh water so long as they are feeding on prey with dilute body fluids and high body-water content, however, during the transition to independence when chicks must learn to feed for themselves-a period of several days-salt loading and dehydration may pose a problem.
