Can improve outcomes but implementation needs to be earlier and more widespread

Basic life support performed by bystanders improves outcomes in cardiorespiratory collapse, yet less than 1% of the general population can perform it effectively. It has been estimated that if 15-20% of the population could perform basic life support, out of hospital mortality could be significantly reduced.1 The most effective way of achieving this is to teach this technique in schools, making it a “life skill.”

In this week's BMJ , a study by Jones and colleagues assesses the effect of a basic life support programme on the ability of children to administer effective chest compressions on a manikin.2 Of the three age groups compared (9-10, 11-12, 13-14 years), only children aged over 13 years could perform chest compressions to the recommended depth of 38-51 mm as effectively as adults. Teaching children basic life support skills

El European Resuscitation Council (ERC) publicó en 1994, 1998 y 20001-4 las guías para el soporte vital pediátrico. La última edición se basó en el International Consensus on Science publicado por la American Heart Association en colaboración con el Internacional Liaison Comité on Resuscitation (ILCOR), la recopilación de una serie de datos basados en la evidencia sobre resucitación, culminaron en la publicación en Agosto del año 2000 de la Guía del año 2000 para la resucitación cardiopulmonar y el cuidado cardiovascular de urgencia 5,6. Este mismo procedimiento fue seguido en los años 2004/2005 y el resultado “Consensus on Science and Treatment Recommendations” se publicó simultáneamente en Resuscitation, Circulation and Pediatrics en Noviembre del 20057,8. El soporte vital pediátrico (SVP) Working Party del ERC considerando tanto esta guía como la literatura científica al respecto, ha recomendado ciertos cambios en las recomendaciones respecto a la ERC y a la SVP.
