Applications of nonlinear fiber optics

Objectives: To find out how fiber distribution system could be utilized for 5G based futuristic higher capacity and lower latency front haul transmission system. Findings: Integrating the transmission of Millimeter wave (Mm wave) signals over the Radio over Fiber (RoF) system i.e. Mm-RoF can be seen as a promising candidate that would satisfy the requirement imposed by 5G wireless system. Further, optical generation of Mm wave signals is a major concern that needs to be taken care of and some appropriate hybrid photonic generation methods should be employed for Mm wave signal distribution over the RoF system that incur lower installation cost and higher transmission performance. Applications: This will enrich the researchers with valuable content on single platform and motivate them to undertake the research work towards the advancement in the photonic generation of Mm wave signals over the RoF network for 5G applications with reduced system cost and complexity.

Analysis of Radio over Fiber system for mitigating four-wave mixing effect

Abstract Crosstalk effects in wavelength multiplexed subcarrier multiplexing radio-over-fiber (RoF) transmission system due to cross phase modulation (XPM) are investigated in the present paper. The crosstalk has been evaluated including the effects of dispersion along with its higher order terms (HOD) and walk-off parameter for different modulation frequencies and transmission distances. Results show that the crosstalk level can be as high as –43 dB after transmission over a 25 km of fiber with two wavelengths and 15 dBm per wavelength of transmitted power. An increment of 7 dB is observed with increase in walk-off parameter and 5 dB with increase in dispersion parameter. The crosstalk also depends upon spacing between optical wavelengths. Simulative investigation shows that increase in separation between wavelengths degrade the overall system performance, which limits the number of optical wavelengths that can be used in transmission system.

Impact of XPM Crosstalk on SCM-Based RoF Systems

The advancements in the field of communication technology and emergence of heterogeneous multimedia applications have led to a paradigm shift from wired networking infrastructure to an optoelectronic networking interface in order to achieve higher transmission efficiency. Radio over Fiber (RoF) is an attractive technology for broadband wireless internet access scenarios as backbone data is carried between base stations using optical fiber providing the user wireless connectivity in the area of coverage. In the present work, we have given a brief description of RoF technology, various optical modulation mechanisms involved along with the recent advancements. Further, in this paper a two-channel RoF link is proposed using Mach Zehnder Modulator (MZM) as external modulator. The performance of proposed link is evaluated at transmission distance of 10, 20, and 30 km for extinction ratio of MZM varying from 10 to 30 dB using Q Factor as performance metrics.

Simulative investigation for third order-IM terms in multi-tone RoF system

In this paper, a wavelength division multiplexed based radio over fiber system has been studied including the effects of four wave mixing (FWM) crosstalk. Five different kinds of fibers have been employed offering different propagation parameters in the system. Crosstalk has been analyzed as a function of channel input power, channel spacing and transmission distance for standard single mode fiber, true wave (TW), true wave reduced slope (TW-RS), corning large effective area fiber (LEAF) and Alcatel Teralight. A comparison is drawn for FWM power for different fibers. Simulation is also carried out to show that FWM crosstalk reduces significantly after transmission over Corning LEAF fiber by 20 dB. Bit error rate (BER), and FWM optical power are also measured. It is found that FWM crosstalk gets minimized by the employment of Alcatel Teralight and corning LEAF fiber by 15 and 20 dB respectively. Thus, transmission on dispersive links using Corning LEAF can outperform other fibers over substantial transmission distances.

Mitigation of FWM induced crosstalk in WDM RoF systems by employing different fibers

In this paper, an analytical model is represented to analyze and improve the performance of radio over fiber (RoF) links against nonlinear distortion. RoF transmission link comprised of a phase modulator, polarizer and optical filter is considered. By controlling angles of polarization, the signals are fed to the modulator. Polarizer helps to suppress intermodulation distortion along the considered link. Performance is found in terms of spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR). Results show an improvement of 7.5-dB in SFDR for a polarized link in comparison with the conventional link.
