A rights management arrangement for storage media such as optical digital video disks (DVDs, also called digital versatile disks) provides adequate copy protection in a limited, inexpensive mass-produceable, low-capability platform such as a dedicated home consumer disk player and also provides enhanced, more flexible security techniques and methods when the same media are used with platforms having higher security capabilities. A control object (or set) defines plural rights management rules for instance, price for performance or rules governing redistribution. Low capability platforms may enable only a subset of the control rules such as controls on copying or marking of played material. Higher capability platforms may enable all (or different subsets) of the rules. Cryptographically strong security is provided by encrypting at least some of the information carried by the media and enabling decryption based on the control set and/or other limitations. A secure “software container” can be used to protectively encapsulate (e.g., by cryptographic techniques) various digital property content (e.g., audio, video, game, etc.) and control object (i.e., set of rules) information. A standardized container format is provided for general use on/with various mediums and platforms. In addition, a special purpose container may be provided for DVD medium and appliances (e.g., recorders, players, etc.) that contains DVD program content (digital property) and DVD medium specific rules. The techniques, systems and methods disclosed herein are capable of achieving compatibility with other protection standards, such as for example, CGMA and Matsushita data protection standards adopted for DVDs. Cooperative rights management may also be provided, where plural networked rights management arrangements collectively control a rights management event on one or more of such arrangements.

Cryptographic methods, apparatus and systems for storage media electronic rights management in closed and connected appliances

The disclosure relates to a recording and reading apparatus constituting a kind of video reservoir in the home of the consumer. Thanks to a large-capacity storing technique with suitable technical means, broadcasters transmit numerous programs via specific channels and the consumer may control the content of his reservoir (by recording, reading and erasing programs). The invention is applicable to on-demand video in the consumer's home with a video reservoir constituting a video-library that is regularly updated by broadcasters and/or by the consumer himself.

In a digital broadcasting signal receiving/recording/reproducing apparatus, a recorded program can be immediately reproduced without performing complicated operations. Only a desired program and information related to the desired program are separated to be extracted from the digital broadcasting signal. Then, the separated/extracted broadcasting signal is supplied to a recording/reproducing apparatus. In the recording/reproducing apparatus, the supplied broadcasting signal is recorded, and the recorded program can be immediately reproduced without complicated manipulating operations during the signal reproducing operation.

The conditional access system of the present invention allows a service provider to supply services, which may be scrambled by a control word, only to those users who have acquired entitlements to these services. The control word is supplied in Entitlement Control Messages (ECM) after having been encrypted using a key. The entitlements of each user are forwarded in Entitlement Management Messages which contain the key. The conditional access system verifies and validates the ECM and EMM prior to processing the control word.

An information transmitter transmits to an information receiver contents data encrypted with a contents key, a contents key encrypted with an individual key specific to the information transmitter, and the individual key encrypted by a delivery key updated at a predetermined cycle and supplied. The information receiver decrypts the individual key with the delivery key, the contents key with the individual key, and the contents data with the contents key. Since the information transmitter has no delivery key, the contents data is not stolen. The information receiver transmits the contents key and a reproduction command to another device, which reproduces the contents with the contents key according to the reproduction command. The information transmitter decodes the contents key with the individual key decoded with the delivery key before update and stores it. Therefore, irrespective of the valid term of the delivery key, the user can purchase the subscribed contents. An information receiver having registered information in using the contents can transfer the right of use to another information receiver having different registered information so as to use the contents.

PURPOSE: To provide a recording/reproducing device for enabling reproduction only when specified conditions are satisfied in a case where video software is distributed via digital broadcasting or communication lines. CONSTITUTION: A transmitted signal is ciphered by a ciphering circuit 22 and recorded. Reproducing conditions are transmitted and stored in a memory 29. When reproduction is to be performed, in accordance with the conditions stored in the memory 29, whether a code is deciphered or not by a code deciphering device 25 is controlled. Thus, reproduction is performed only when the specified conditions are met.

Recording/reproducing device

PURPOSE:To sufficiently protect video data transferred through a bus when plural digital video units are connected through the bus and video data is transferred between the plural digital video units through the bus. CONSTITUTION:A video unit 201 on a transmission-side transfers a command with video units 202 and 203, and specifies the opposite video unit 202 to which transfer is permitted by using key information. When transfer is permitted, a correct recognition command is returned. A command for cipher decoding is transmitted to the video unit 202 to which transfer is permitted, and ciphered data is transmitted. The opposite video unit 202 receives the transmitted command for cipher decoding and decodes transmitted and ciphered data based on the command for cipher decoding.

Data transmission/reception method for video unit

PURPOSE: To improve interaction between a station side and a user by previously entering and recording a digital signal from a transmission line as a band compression coded state, reading out only information required by the user and converting the read information into an audible state. CONSTITUTION: A receiving terminal 1 inputs a digital signal S1 encoded by band compression and ciphered to a tuner 3A of a front end block 3 and demodulates by a demodulator 3B based upon a demodulation system corresponding to a transmission line and the demodulated signal is outputted to deciphering blocks 4A, 4B through an error correcting circuit 3C or the like. Digital data outputted from the block 4B in a storage device 2 are collectively recorded in a recording medium by a digital recorder 8 as a band-compressed state. When a reproducing instruction is inputted from a user, required data are read out front the recording medium, demodulated and corrected at its error and an MPEG decoder 9 releases band compression processing applied to the digital data and outputs the data to a monitoring device or the like.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display an image of an image data file onto a screen with a proper aspect ratio by converting number of picture element samples of the image data file in the case that an aspect ratio of an occupied area of a unit picture element sample differs from a display screen of a computer system and from image data of an image data file. SOLUTION: A decode block 21 applies decode processing to received image file data in the unit of a digital interface blocks and converts the data into sample data of a luminance signal component and a color difference signal component and provides an output of the result with a normal/wide identification signal of an image file to be displayed. A picture element number conversion block 22 converts, e.g. number of picture elements in the horizontal direction based on the received component signal data by one frame, an NTSC/PAL identification signal and the normal/wide identification signal.
