Rough machining is a major stage of production in face-gear precision manufacturing, and flexible, universal, and efficient rough machining is conducive to the reduction of manufacturing cost and time. Therefore, in this paper, the planing method for spur face-gear processing with a 4-axis CNC planer is proposed, together with a detailed study on the principle of meshing between the shaper and the face-gear, equations of the shaper tooth surface and the face-gear tooth surface, and the application of the planer tool to copy the shaper. Then, on this basis, equations of profiling curves as well as equations of the swing angle range and the radical feed range of the planer tool are derived. Finally, the method of planing the spur face-gear through multi-group envelopes is proposed with the NC processing code written according to the above principle, and the feasibility of the planing method for the spur face-gear and the correctness of the NC code are proved by the results of the simulation processing test based on the Vericut software.

Research on manufacturing method of planing for spur face-gear with 4-axis CNC planer

This paper proposes a grinding method for face gears with CNC machines. Interpolation formulas of CNC linkage are deduced based on a five-coordinate machine tool. An analytical model for predicting envelope residual when grinding face gears based on grinding disc wheel is developed. The generating laws of envelope residual for the envelope manner are investigated. The influence of tool feed magnitude on surface envelope residuals is analyzed in circumferential angle direction. The maximum envelope residual increases nonlinearly with incremental angle. A grinding experiment is performed on a CNC grinding machine. The tooth surface deviation indicates that the CNC grinding method is efficient. The variation trends of different feed magnitudes along circumferential angle direction coincide with the simulation results. Finally, the values of envelope residuals are verified by an envelope simulation with software AutoCAD. The study provides an effective approach for parameter selection of highly precise and efficient grinding of face gear.

Multistep Method for Grinding Face-Gear by Worm

A scheme for cutting face gears with a sphericity hob and reconstructive hobbing machine was proposed.The basic worm helicoid surface of sphericity hob was deduced,and the coordinate systems for cutting face gears were established.The error difference surface research indicates that theory surface error of the face gear using sphericity hob is very small.The forming error of hobbing is much less than that of slotting cutter.Tooth contact analysis(TCA)indicates that the contact path position and direction are consistent with the theory results,and the transmission errors curve with the new method is favorably parabolic.This research finds a new method for machining face gears,and expands the application scope for the sphericity hob.

The fillet surface equation of face gears was presented when the top of the shaper tooth was rounded.A 'mesh filter method' was proposed in view of the particularity of face-gear's structure,and the distortion of the element shape was corrected.Based on tooth contact analysis(TCA),the variation of bending stresses during the cycle of meshing was computed with 3-D contact finite element method when some parameters changed.The results indicate that both of the nominal pressure angle and shaft adjustments of face-gear have significant influence on the bending strength.
