Vision at levels of night road illumination: literature 1967-1969

There exist a number of reports 1 4 that are concerned with protection against the glare produced by the headlights of approaching motor vehicles. Several means of reducing such glare have been proposed: (1) Absorbing windshields or absorbing glasses (sunglasses). These reduce the over-all transmission of light (and thereby shorten the seeing distance), but they do not reduce headlight glare as such; in fact, they are dangerous and should not be used for driving at night. (2) Polarized headlights and windshields. This as such is a good solution, but concurrent absorption, high cost, and difficulty of enforcement in older cars, make its adoption questionable. (3) Lighting of all freeways. The cost would be prohibitive. (4) Better highways, with widely separated lanes or median barriers. The costs, likewise, would be very high.

THIS IS A REPORT OF TWO PILOT STUDIES WITH SMALL SAMPLES, A SERIES OF PART-TASK SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS WITH 121 SUBJECTS, AND A FOLLOW-UP STUDY, ON THE EFFECTS OF WEARING NIGHT DRIVING GLASSES. THE FINDINGS IN ALL CASES ARE CONTROVERSIAL, WITH SOME SUBJECTS DEMONSTRATING MORE EFFECTIVE PERFORMANCE WITH THE GLASSES AND OTHERS WITHOUT, ALTHOUGH NO GROUP TRENDS WERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT. SIMILARLY CONFLICTING DATA WERE OBTAINED WHEN SUBJECTS WERE INTERVIEWED AS TO THE EFFECTS OF THE GLASSES. THE NEED FOR MORE SOPHISTICATED RESEARCH IS SUGGESTED. /AUTHOR/
