Abstract: The transmission structures which are used for building millimeter wave components and systems are: microstrip, suspended stripline, fin-lines, dielectric integrated guides, and waveguides including groove guides. Among these, the finlines and suspended striplines have emerged as the most popular media for millimetre wave circuit integration over the frequency range from 30 GHz to about 120 GHz. Besides the above transmission media, there exists a whole array of alternate guide structures which has the capability to extend the range of operation to the higher end of the millimeter wave band. This includes a class of dielectric integrated guides which have the potential for developing into a low cost technology with the attractive possibility of integrating high performance dielectric antenna to RF front end. The authors attempt to establish a base for advanced theoretical and experimental research leading to component/subsystem development in the area of millimeter wave integrated circuits. In this paper, design of the above transmission lines and also techniques and technology employing them are reviewed with particular emphasis on novel techniques developed at CARE, IIT Delhi.
