An electrically actuated braking system (30) of the type having a plurality of brake actuators (35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49) disposed on a carrier housing (13) to selectively apply a braking force to effect the restraint of wheel rotation has the particular actuators employed during a braking event determined, at least in part, by monitored wheel motion. The system (30) reduces brake energy consumption and heat generation during slow speed operations, reduces braking induced vibration, and compensates for individual actuator failure. The system (30) includes a first circuit for energizing only a first proper subset of the plurality of the brake actuators (35, 37, 39, 41, 43, 45, 47, 49) upon occurrence of a braking command (59); a second circuit for energizing only a second proper subset of the plurality of brake actuators upon occurrence of a braking command; and wheel motion monitors (51, 53) providing control signals for selectively enabling the first circuit and not the second circuit in response to certain of the control signals, the second circuit and not the first circuit in response to other of the control signals, and both the first and second circuits in response to still other of the control signals. Typically, there are four disjoint proper subsets the union of which comprises all actuators for the given brake. Preferably the first and second circuits each energize axactly one brake actuator. In one form, the first and second circuits are both energized during normal braking while the first, but not the second, is energized during slow speed taxi or towing operation. In another form, the first subset comprises all properly operating brake actuators while the second comprises all malfunctioning brake actuators and the second circuit remains un-energized.

According to the invention, upon a signal to trigger automatic, quick, or emergency braking, a) the controlled electropneumatic braking device (2) and the uncontrolled brake pressure control device (4) are activated simultaneously and b) a first value (10) for the brake pressure produced by the controlled electropneumatic braking device (2) or a first value for a pilot control pressure representing said brake pressure and a second value (12) for the brake pressure produced by the uncontrolled brake pressure control device (4) or a second value (12) for a pilot control pressure representing said brake pressure are compared with each other, wherein this comparison occurs by means of the influence of the first value (10) and of the second value (12) on mechanical components of an exclusively pneumatic and mechanical comparison device (14), and c) in accordance with said comparison, a brake pressure is set in the at least one pneumatic brake actuator (16) exclusively on the basis of the first value (10) or exclusively on the basis of the second value (12) or on the basis of the first value (10) and the second value (12).

Verfahren zur Steuerung einer eine geregelte elektro-pneumatische Bremseinrichtung (2) mit Bremsdruckregelung und eine ungeregelte Bremsdrucksteuereinrichtung (4) zur Erzeugung eines ungeregelten Bremsdrucks sowie wenigstens einen pneumatischen Bremsaktuator (16) aufweisenden Druckluftbremseinrichtung eines Schienenfahrzeugs im Falle einer Zwangs-, Schnell- oder Notbremsung, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass auf ein Signal zur Auslosung einer Zwangs-, Schnell- oder Notbremsung hin a) die geregelte elektro-pneumatische Bremseinrichtung (2) und die ungeregelte Bremsdrucksteuereinrichtung (4) gleichzeitig aktiviert werden und b) ein erster Wert (10) fur den von der geregelten, elektro-pneumatischen Bremseinrichtung (2) erzeugten Bremsdruck oder ein erster Wert (10) fur einen diesen Bremsdruck reprasentierenden Vorsteuerdruck und ein zweiter Wert (12) fur den von der ungeregelten Bremsdrucksteuereinrichtung (4) erzeugten Bremsdruck oder ein zweiter Wert (12) fur einen diesen Bremsdruck reprasentierenden Vorsteuerdruck miteinander verglichen werden, wobei dieser Vergleich durch Einwirkung des ersten Werts (10) und des zweiten Werts (12) auf mechanische Komponenten einer ausschlieslich pneumatisch-mechanischen Vergleichseinrichtung (14) erfolgt, und c) abhangig von diesem Vergleich ein Bremsdruck auf der Basis ausschlieslich des ersten Werts (10) oder ausschlieslich auf der Basis des zweiten Werts (12) oder auf der Basis des ersten Werts (10) und des zweiten Werts (12) in den wenigstens einen pneumatischen Bremsaktuator (16) eingesteuert wird, wobei solange der erste Wert (10) um nicht mehr als ein vorgegebener Bruchteil unterhalb des zweiten Werts (12) liegt, der Bremsdruck oder ein diesen reprasentierender Vorsteuerdruck durch den ersten Wert (10), andernfalls durch den zweiten Wert (12) gebildet wird.

Die Erfindung betrifft ein Verfahren zur Steuerung der mittels einer Bremszange auf eine Bremsscheibe an einer Radachse eines Schienenfahrzeuges, insbesondere eines Hochgeschwindigkeitsschienenfahrzeuges, ubertragenen Bremskraft, wobei die Steuerung in Abhangigkeit von der Fahrzeuggeschwindigkeit erfolgt. Die Erfindung betrifft ferner eine Steuereinrichtung fur ein Bremssystem eines Schienenfahrzeuges, insbesondere eines Hochgeschwindigkeitsschienenfahrzeuges, zur Steuerung der mittels einer Bremszange auf eine Bremsscheibe ubertragenen Bremskraft sowie ein eine solche Steuereinrichtung umfassendes Bremssystem.

The braking device and method according to the invention slows a mass moving with an initial speed at the time the braking device is activated. Sets of braking elements (16) having more or fewer braking elements (18) are activated depending on the initial speed. The device and method minimize variations in average friction coefficient over wide ranges of initial speed, which are typical for many braking materials. The invention broadens the range of braking materials for use in braking high speed trains, and is particularly useful with carbon/carbon braking materials.
