This invention relates to a new catalyst for converting hydrocarbons. The catalyst comprises a platinum group component, a Group IVA component, especially tin, an alkali or alkaline earth component, more than 0.2 weight %, calculated on an elemental basis, of a halogen component and a porous carrier material, wherein the atomic ratio of the alkali or alkaline earth component to the platinum group component is more than 10. The catalyst is particularly useful for dehydrogenating paraffins having from 2 to 5 or more carbon atoms to the corresponding mono-olefins, or for dehydrogenating mono-olefins having from 3 to 5 or more carbon atoms to the corresponding di-olefins.

Dehydrogenation catalyst composition

A novel catalytic composite comprising a platinum group metal component; a modifier metal component selected from the group consisting of a tin component, germanium component, rhenium component and mixtures thereof; an optional alkali or alkaline earth metal component or mixtures thereof, an optional halogen component, and an optional catalytic modifier component on a refractory oxide support having a nominal diameter of at least about 850 microns. The distribution of the platinum group metal component is such that the platinum group component is surface-impregnated where substantially all of the platinum group metal component is located at most within a 400 micron exterior layer of the support. The effective amount of the modifier metal component is uniformly dispersed throughout the refractory oxide support. The distribution of the surface-impregnated platinum metal component is such that the novel catalyst has particular utility as a hydrocarbon dehydrogenation catalyst in a hydrocarbon dehydrogenation process.

Dehydrogenation catalyst composition and hydrocarbon dehydrogenation process

A catalyst composition comprising palladium, silver and a support material (preferably alumina) is contacted at a relatively low temperature (of up to about 60° C.) with a liquid composition comprising an effective reducing agent (preferably an alkali metal borohydride, hydrazinc, formaldehyde, formic acid, ascorbic acid, dextrose, aluminum powder). Preferably, at least one alkali metal compound (more preferably KOH, RbOH, CsOH, KF) is also present in the liquid composition. An improved process for selectively hydrogenating acetylene (to ethylene) employs this wet-reduced catalyst composition.

Selective acetylene hydrogenation

A catalyst containing an overlayer of a catalytic promoter on a porous refractory support containing an underbedded Group VIII metal-containing component. The catalyst is prepared by sequential incorporation of the Group VIII metal followed by the additional catalytic promoter component, usually a Group VIB metal, with the porous refractory oxide support. The catalyst has a MoO 3 /NiO weight ratio less than 6 to 1 and more than 4 weight percent of NiO. The catalyst is especially useful for simultaneous hydrodenitrogenation and hydrodesulfurization of a gas oil, particularly when the refractory oxide support has a narrow pore size distribution.

Hydrocarbon conversion process

A novel catalytic composite comprising a platinum group metal component; a modifier metal component selected from the group consisting of a tin component, germanium component, rhenium component and mixtures thereof; an alkali or alkaline earth metal component or mixtures thereof, an optional halogen component, and an optional catalytic modifier component on a refractory oxide support having a nominal diameter of at least about 850 microns. The novel catalyst has particular utility as a hydrocarbon dehydrogenation catalyst. A method of preparing the catalyst is also disclosed.

Dehydrogenation catalyst composition and paraffin dehydrogenation

A film of a noble metal is deposited on the surface of a carrier without substantial penetration of the carrier by immersing the carrier first in a dilute solution of a salt of the noble metal, removing the carrier and heating and drying it to produce precipitation cores of the noble metal on the surface of the carrier, and then immersing the carrier with the precipitation cores in a solution of a noble metal salt which also contains a reducing agent for the salt and a stabilizer for the solution. The film of noble metal thus produced on the surface is adherent thereto and is highly active as a catalyzer for removing pollutants from the exhaust gas of an automobile.
