Tying together linguistics, philology and philosophy, this monograph explores the morphological and semantic development of the heavily marked reflexive system in Ancient Greek and argues that these changes are connected to a reconceptualisation of the human subject as characteristically reflexive.

Cette etude vise a examiner les affections de la langue et leur manifestation dans le Corpus Hippocraticum. Au niveau de l’anatomie et de la physiologie, la langue fait office de messagere de la connaissance et des sensations qui sont interpretees par le cerveau. L’etude des differents etats pathologiques qui sont susceptibles d’affecter la langue fait ressortir la frequence de l’etiologie humorale et climatique; elle met en evidence celle que l’on peut associer a des facteurs accidentels d’ordre externe ou interne; elle revele la sequence chronologique de la manifestation des differentes affections linguales; finalement, elle confirme l’aspect empirique de la medecine de l’ecole cnidienne. This article is an exploration of tongue illnesses and their expression in the Corpus Hippocraticum. Anatomically and physiologically, the tongue serves as the messenger of the knowledge and sensations interpreted by the brain. A study of the various conditions likely affecting the tongue highlights the frequency of humoral and climatic etiology; emphasizes the one associated with external or internal accidental factors; reveals the chronological sequence marking the onset of lingual illnesses; and ultimately confirms the empirical aspect of the Cnidian school of medicine.

Les fonctions et les affections de la langue dans le Corpus Hippocraticum

In five passages of the Greek lyric poets the psychological term noos appears in contexts which relate it to sight. These passages reveal significant features about the way noos “sees”; or fails to “see”;. Noos appears to function on an inner level in a person just as eyes perceive the external world. But noos also differs from outer vision. As it acts deep within the person, it apparently can influence how the eyes see. It can, therefore, strongly influence a person's behaviour.

Homer, Hesiod, and the lyric poets locate intellectual, emotional, and volitional activities in several psychic organs, among which are noos and phren. Although attention has been given to their meanings, the two have sometimes been treated as if synonymous K The exact relationship between them has yet to be clarified. Noos and phren rarely appear together, but where they do the passages illuminate the relation between them. Treating all the texts from the lyric poets that mention them together, this paper will consider how a person in the Archaic Age viewed these two psychic organs.
