A hand piece for use with a laser includes a scanning mechanism which controls dosimetry of radiation applied to a target area which is adjustable to limit thermal diffusion from the light absorbing portion of the irradiated target site for selective target specific energy deposition. When used for dermatologic purposes, the adjustable scanning mechanism permits radiation to impinge on tissue for a predetermined period of time for the selective necrosis of highly-filled blood vessels, while leaving adjacent tissue and empty blood vessels undamaged. The dwell time of the laser beam is designed to match the diffusion time for thermal destruction of the wall of the abnormal vessel, with the dwell time adjusted by the scanning rate.

Laser system for providing target specific energy deposition and damage

A high speed non-contact beam scanning device (20) sized and shaped to provide the ergonomic benefits of a pen or wand (1). The device is well suited for reading one or two dimensional bar-code (9, 10) or other printed matter. In order to achieve the high density optical packaging necessary for its high performance to size benefits, the device employs a novel in-line or 'axial' gyrating, or 'axial' scan element. Reflected light, which carries information contained on the target, is collected by an internal non-imaging light concentrator (34) and is processed by signal processing electronics (24). Communication from the device is achievable by a cable or by wireless communication technique.

A non-contact light beam scan system small enough to fit into a hand holdable wand, pen or calculator size terminal incorporates a novel scan element which can scan at rates of ten to hundreds of scans per second in one or two dimensions. The device is immune to low frequency vibrations and can scan large angles of 60 degrees or more. Automatic trigger circuitry enables it to be used equally well in hand held or fixed mount applications. The depth of operating range is extended with a novel focal system which is integrated with the light source. The entire scanning system for generating a beam, focusing the beam electronically, scanning the beam, collecting light from a target and converting it into electrical signals, and automatically generating a trigger signal can work with industry standard low or high speed bar code decoders.

A method is provided for depositing a hard wear resistant surface onto a porous or non-porous base material of a medical implant. The wear resistant surface of the medical implant device may be formed by a Laser Based Metal Deposition (LBMD) method such as Laser Engineered Net Shaping (LENS). The wear resistant surface may include a blend of multiple different biocompatible materials. Further, functionally graded layers of biocompatible materials may be used to form the wear resistant surface. Usage of a porous material for the base may promote bone ingrowth to allow the implant to fuse strongly with the bone of a host patient. The hard wear resistant surface provides device longevity, particularly when applied to bearing surfaces such as artificial joint bearing surfaces or a dental implant bearing surfaces. An antimicrobial material such as silver may be deposited in combination with a metal to form an antimicrobial surface deposit.

A laser beam reflection system for applying a laser beam to an area to be treated. The laser beam reflection system has a hollow head housing, first reflecting mirror means disposed in the rotary head housing and adapted to deflect the laser beam introduced into the rotary head housing away from the axis, second reflecting mirror means disposed in the rotary head housing and adapted to reflect the laser beam coming from the first reflecting mirror means to such a direction as to traverse the axis, and third reflecting mirror means disposed in the head housing movably in the direction traversing the axis and adapted to reflect and focus onto the area the laser beam coming from the second reflecting mirror means. The laser beam reflection system of the invention can be used for welding, surface treatment, heat treatment, cutting of various materials, and a light source of laser communication systems.

The number of dry type transformers for use in buildings and industrial plants has increased in order to meet new safety requirements in Japan which prohibit the use of PCB. Dry type transformers are grouped as conventional dry type Class-H transformers impregnated with silicone varnish, or as resin molded transformers. A new casting resin, which consists of a family of isocyanurate resins, and features good crack and heat resistant properties, has been developed by Hitachi Ltd. Large capacity Class-H resin molded trans-formers are manufactured with this casting resin named MI Resin(R). The salient features of the transformer are its light weight, small size, non-flammability, low noise, and ease of maintenance.

New synthetic resin insulation systems have been established in Japan, as in Europe and the United States [2], and have a history of almost fifteen years. The research work of authors, initiated in 1949, led to the completion of the unsaturated polyester insulation system called SLS insulation. Outstanding performance was obtained as of 1957 when this new insulation system was applied to large rotary-type machinery. In the meantime, a trial manufacture study was conducted on epoxy-resin insulation in view of its excellent electrical and mechanical properties. As a result, an epoxy insulating system of quality distinctly superior to the former system was successfully put on a mass-production basis. This paper describes the fundamental insulation procedure, the dielectric properties, and the service experience of this system.

A New Insulation Experience in Large Rotating Machinery in Japan

PURPOSE:To make possible circumferential welding of an arbitrary diameter, in a laser beam rotary welding head for performing circumferential welding, by making a reflecting mirror for laser beam condensing movable in the radial direction from the center of the revolving shaft of the head. CONSTITUTION:Plane reflecting mirrors 9, 10 of a laser beam 1 are provided within a laser beam welding head 8 and a parabolic reflecting mirror 11, for condensing the parallel beams is further installed, then welding is performed by focusing the laser beam 1 to the weld zone 18 of a pipe 16 and a pipe plate 17. In this case, a knob 13 is mounted to the reflecting mirror 11 for condensing laser beam and the reflecting mirror 11 is made movable in the radial direction from the revolving shaft 19 of the welding head 8 by operating this knob. Sinced the distance between the revolving shaft 19 and the welding point 18 of the focus of the laser beam 1 may be freely controlled by this movement, the circumferential welding of an extremely small diameter may be easily performed.
