TL;DR: In this paper, the authors explore the relationship between consumer activities and environmental impacts in the US and find that more than 80% of the energy used and the CO 2 emitted in the United States are a consequence of consumer demands and the economic activities to support these demands.

Total Energy Use and Related CO2 Emissions of American Household Consumption, 1997-2007
TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied how U.S. household consumption contributed to national and global energy use and related carbon emissions from 1997 to 2007, finding that household consumption was a dominant driving force of energy use.
