Biosorption of heavy metals by Saccharomyces cerevisiae: a review.

The biosorption process has been established as characteristics of dead biomasses of both cellulosic and microbial origin to bind metal ion pollutants from aqueous suspension. The high effectiveness of this process even at low metal concentration, similarity to ion exchange treatment process, but cheaper and greener alternative to conventional techniques have resulted in a mature biosorption technology. Yet its adoption to large scale industrial wastewaters treatment has still been a distant reality. The purpose of this review is to make in-depth analyses of the various aspects of the biosorption technology, staring from the various biosorbents used till date and the various factors affecting the process. The design of better biosorbents for improving their physico-chemical features as well as enhancing their biosorption characteristics has been discussed. Better economic value of the biosorption technology is related to the repeated reuse of the biosorbent with minimum loss of efficiency. In this context desorption of the metal pollutants as well as regeneration of the biosorbent has been discussed in detail. Various inhibitions including the multi mechanistic role of the biosorption technology has been identified which have played a contributory role to its non-commercialization.

Biosorption of cadmium and lead ions by ethanol treated waste baker's yeast biomass.

Waste baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) was used as a biosorbent for Cu +2 biosorption. The yeast cells were treated with caustic soda, ethanol and heat to increase their biosorption capacity. Among the treatment methods used, the highest copper uptake (21.1 mg g -1 ) was obtained with the caustic treatment of baker's yeast. The effect of initial copper concentration and pH on biosorption for caustic treated yeast was studied. The highest Cu +2 uptake (120.7 mg g -1 ) was obtained at pH 4.0, for 198.2 mg l -1 initial copper ion concentration. The Langmuir model and Freundlich equation were applied to the experimental data and the Langmuir model was found to be in better correlation with the experimental data. The Langmuir constants were qmax (mg g -1 ) = 181.8 and b (l mg -1 ) = 0.0312. In packed bed column studies with calcium alginate immobilized caustic treated yeast, it was found that the real biosorption capacity came from the alginate gel and immobilizing caustic treated yeast particles in the gel only slightly increased the biosorption capacity of the gel. Maya hucreleri NaOH, etil alkol ve ›s› ile muamele edilerek biyosorpsiyon kapasiteleri art›r›lmaya cal›fl›lm›fl ve bu yontemler aras›nda en yuksek bak›r kazan›m› (21.1 mg g -1 ) ile kostikle muamele edilmifl ekmek mayas› hucrelerinden elde edilmifltir. Kostikle muamele edilmifl maya hucreleri ile bafllang›c Cu +2 konsantrasyonu ve pH'n›n biyosorpsiyon uzerine etkisi incelenmifltir. En yuksek Cu +2 kazan›m› (120.7 mg g -1 ) pH 4.0'da, 198.2 mg l -1 bafllang›c bak›r iyonu konsantrasyonunda elde edilmifltir. Langmuir modeli ve Freundlich denklii deneysel verilere uygulanm›fl ve Langmuir modelinin deneysel verilerle daha iyi korelasyon icerisinde olduu belirlenmifltir. Langmuir sabitleri olan qmax (mg g -1 ) ve b (l mg -1 ) s›ras›yla 181.8 ve 0.0312 olarak belirlenmifltir. Kostikle muamele edilmifl maya hucreleri kalsiyum aljinat jelinde tutuklanm›fl ve dolgulu yatak kolonda yap›lan denemelerde gercek biyosorpsiyon kapasitesinin aljinat jelinden kaynakland›¤›, immobilize maya hucrelerinin ise jelin biyosorpsiyon kapasitesini sadece bir miktar art›rd›¤› belirlenmifltir.
