There has been significant interest and progress in the field of vehicular ad hoc networks over the last several years. VANETs comprise vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications based on wireless local area network technologies. The distinctive set of candidate applications (e.g., collision warning and local traffic information for drivers), resources (licensed spectrum, rechargeable power source), and the environment (e.g., vehicular traffic flow patterns, privacy concerns) make the VANET a unique area of wireless communication. This article gives an overview of the field, providing motivations, challenges, and a snapshot of proposed solutions.

A tutorial survey on vehicular ad hoc networks

Recently, many efforts have been made to develop more efficient Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) protocols for on-demand route planning according to observed traffic congestion or incidents, as well as for safety applications. Because practical experiments are often not feasible, simulation of network protocol behavior in Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET) scenarios is strongly demanded for evaluating the applicability of developed network protocols. In this work, we discuss the need for bidirectional coupling of network simulation and road traffic microsimulation for evaluating IVC protocols. As the selection of a mobility model influences the outcome of simulations to a great extent, the use of a representative model is necessary for producing meaningful evaluation results. Based on these observations, we developed the hybrid simulation framework Veins (Vehicles in Network Simulation), composed of the network simulator OMNeT++ and the road traffic simulator SUMO. In a proof-of-concept study, we demonstrate its advantages and the need for bidirectionally coupled simulation based on the evaluation of two protocols for incident warning over VANETs. With our developed methodology, we can advance the state-of-the-art in performance evaluation of IVC and provide means to evaluate developed protocols more accurately.

Bidirectionally Coupled Network and Road Traffic Simulation for Improved IVC Analysis

We present a realistic, yet computationally inexpensive simulation model for IEEE 802.11p radio shadowing in urban environments. Based on real world measurements using IEEE 802.11p/DSRC devices, we estimated the effect that buildings and other obstacles have on the radio communication between vehicles. Especially for evaluating safety applications in the field of Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs), stochastic models are not sufficient for evaluating the radio communication in simulation. Motivated by similar work on WiFi measurements, we therefore created an empirical model for modeling buildings and their properties to accurately simulate the signal propagation. We validated our model using real world measurements in a city scenario for different types of obstacles. Our simulation results show a very high accuracy when compared with the measurement results, while only requiring a marginal overhead in terms of computational complexity.

A computationally inexpensive empirical model of IEEE 802.11p radio shadowing in urban environments

Today's advanced simulators facilitate thorough studies on VANETs but are hampered by the computational effort required to consider all of the important influencing factors. In particular, large-scale simulations involving thousands of communicating vehicles cannot be served in reasonable simulation times with typical network simulation frameworks. A solution to this challenge might be found in hybrid simulations that encapsulate parts of a discrete-event simulation in an analytical model while maintaining the simulation's credibility. In this paper, we introduce a hybrid simulation model that analytically represents the probability of packet reception in an IEEE 802.11p network based on four inputs: the distance between sender and receiver, transmission power, transmission rate, and vehicular traffic density. We also describe the process of building our model which utilizes a large set of simulation traces and is based on general linear least squares approximation techniques. The model is then validated via the comparison of simulation results with the model output. In addition, we present a transmission power control problem in order to show the model's suitability for solving parameter optimization problems, which are of fundamental importance to VANETs.

An empirical model for probability of packet reception in vehicular ad hoc networks

This paper aims at enabling accurate and efficient evaluation of emerging vehicular network applications such as Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). A distributed simulation platform that integrates transportation simulation and wireless network simulation is proposed and implemented, providing a user level simulation environment to evaluate the feasibility and performance limitations of VANETs in supporting ITS. The proposed simulation platform facilitates the dynamic interaction between the two simulation domains, allowing runtime control of vehicles' behavior in the transportation simulation as they react in real time to information exchange in the simulated communication network. Case studies are conducted within the proposed simulation platform to evaluate the performance of Dynamic Route Planning when deployed in VANETs, using metrics collected at the transportation system level such as travel and delay time. The effectiveness of three representative VANET dynamic adaptation protocols in enhancing the application performance in scenarios with high vehicle density are compared in the case studies. The experiment results show that Dynamic Route Planning can be effectively supported by a VANET system with up to 118% increase on the number of vehicles reaching the destination, 36.2% reduction on travel time and 56.1% reduction on delay time.

Evaluation of VANET-based advanced intelligent transportation systems

To study the impact of inter-vehicle communications on (vehicular) transport efficiency, e.g., for traffic management purposes, there is a need for efficient and accurate large-scale simulations that jointly consider both, the vehicular traffic and the communication system. To overcome the scalability limitations of current discrete event-based network simulators like NS-2, we propose a hybrid simulation approach that can significantly reduce the number of scheduled events by making use of statistical models. Basically, we treat some data traffic, which is not the primary concern of the simulation study, as 'noise' (e.g., beaconing of nodes). While accurately modeling this background traffic we only need to simulate via discrete event-based simulation the actual application we are interested in (e.g., a data dissemination protocol). We outline how the characterization of the background traffic is gained, statistically validated and used. The achievable speed-up is demonstrated in a first application study where a speed funnel is built using inter-vehicle communications. In this scenario, the conservatively estimated speed-up factor is about 500 compared to a pure discrete event-based simulation.
