Biological rhythms are regulated by homeostatic mechanisms that assure that physiological clocks function reliably independent of temperature changes in the environment. Temperature compensation, the independence of the oscillatory period on temperature, is known to play a central role in many biological rhythms, but it is rather rare in chemical oscillators. We study the influence of temperature on the oscillatory dynamics during the catalytic oxidation of formic acid on a polycrystalline platinum electrode. The experiments are performed at five temperatures from 5 to 25 °C, and the oscillations are studied under galvanostatic control. Under oscillatory conditions, only non-Arrhenius behavior is observed. Overcompensation with temperature coefficient (q10, defined as the ratio between the rate constants at temperature T + 10 °C and at T) < 1i s found in most cases, except that temperature compensation with q10 ≈ 1 predominates at high applied currents. The behavior of the period and the amplitude result from a complex interplay between temperature and applied current or, equivalently, the distance from thermodynamic equilibrium. High, positive apparent activation energies were obtained under voltammetric, nonoscillatory conditions, which implies that the non-Arrhenius behavior observed under oscillatory conditions results from the interplay among reaction steps rather than from a weak temperature dependence of the individual steps.

Temperature (Over)Compensation in an Oscillatory Surface Reaction

We report in this paper the effect of temperature on the oscillatory electro-oxidation of methanol on polycrystalline platinum in aqueous sulfuric acid media. Potential oscillations were studied under galvanostatic control and at four temperatures ranging from 5 to 35 °C. For a given temperature, the departure from thermodynamic equilibrium does not affect the oscillation period and results in a slight increase of the oscillation amplitude. Apparent activation energies were also evaluated in voltammetric and chronoamperometric experiments and were compared to those obtained under oscillatory conditions. In any case, the apparent activation energies values fell into the region between 50 and 70 kJ mol−1. Specifically under oscillatory conditions an apparent activation energy of 60 ± 3 kJ mol−1 and a temperature coefficient q10 of about 2.3 were observed. The present findings extend our recently published report (J. Phys. Chem. A, 2008, 112, 4617) on the temperature effect on the oscillatory electro-oxidation of formic acid. We found that, despite the fact that both studies were carried out under similar conditions, unlike the case of formic acid, only conventional, Arrhenius, dynamics was observed for methanol.

Perturbations of the briggs-rauscher oscillating system by iron-phenanthroline complexes

A new organic substrate has been used to promote oscillations under batch conditions in the Briggs-Rauscher oscillating system. The new substrate, 1,4-cyclohexanedione (CHD), reacts with aqueous iodine via an enol mechanism. We discuss the effect of the initial concentrations, the temperature and chemical perturbations. In a definite range of concentrations long-lived oscillations with two significantly different frequency periods were observed. The low frequency parts are temperature-dependent while the high frequency oscillations do not show temperature dependence. The inhibitory effects of 1,4-hydroquinone and 1,4-benzoquinone on the oscillations and the kinetics of some important component reactions were studied to develop a model for the simulation of the observed oscillations.

Briggs–Rauscher Reaction with 1,4-Cyclohexanedione Substrate

Novel aspects of influence of gas evolution on oscillating chemical reaction are considered on a model of the modified Briggs-Rauscher reaction with acetone. The mechanism proposed by Noyes with Furrow and De Kepper with Epstein, adapted for acetone and expanded with oxygen evolution and first-order escape of iodine by interphase transport, was subjected to further extension, and calculations assuming direct proportionality of the rate of iodine escape on the surface area of the oxygen gas trapped in the solution as well as calculations considering first-order back-flow of iodine from the gas phase into the solution were performed. Furthermore, the concentrations of iodine vapors were considered to be variable within the bubble population, as all the bubbles are not in contact with the reaction mixture for the same length of time. Distribution functions of the surface size over the range of concentrations of iodine in the contacting gas phase were introduced and derived, and whereas they were proved not to play any role in the total intensity of iodine return when it is first-order, the article also demonstrates their explicit consideration in calculations to be essential if the dependence of the rate of iodine return into the solution on its concentration is not linear, for example, in future extensions of the model with bubble radius also considered variable.

Modeling of Interactions Between Iodine Interphase Transport and Oxygen Production in the Modified Briggs−Rauscher Reaction with Acetone

Benzylmalonic acid (BzMA) reacts via an enol mechanism with aqueous iodine to form rather stable iodobenzylmalonic acid. In the presence of iodate, which oxidizes iodide to di-iodine, the reaction goes to completion. The kinetics of the reaction BzMA + I2 + IO3− + H+ have been studied and the results were interpreted with a suitable mechanism. In a mixture with acidic iodate, hydrogen peroxide, and manganous ions, BzMA can serve as a substrate for a Briggs–Rauscher-type oscillating reaction. The behavior of this oscillator has been studied in detail. A mechanistic interpretation of the oscillations based on a new kinetic model is also given. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
