The energy conservation through energy efficiency in the building has acquired prime importance all over the world. The four main aspects for energy efficiency in a building include first and foremost the nearly zero energy passive building design before actual construction, secondly the usage of low energy building materials during its construction, thirdly use of energy efficient equipments for low operational energy requirement and lastly integration of renewable energy technologies for various applications. These aspects have been discussed along with their economics and environmental impacts briefly in this paper. The first aspect is related to the prior design before construction of a solar passive building techniques adapted all over the world not only for passive heating/cooling but also for daylighting the building. Second is utilizing the low embodied energy building materials for building construction. The third aspect deals with the operational energy conservation using energy efficient equipments in the building. Lastly, the building has to include utility of integrated renewable systems for hot water heating, solar photovoltaic electrification, etc.

Embodied carbon mitigation and reduction in the built environment - What does the evidence say?

Sulphuric acid (H2SO4) was utilized as an activator for the preparation of activated carbon from a biomass solid waste, coconut leaves. The sulphuric acid-treated activated carbon (SAC) was used as low-cost adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue (MB) cationic dye from aqueous solution. Adsorption of MB using SAC from aqueous solution under equilibrium and kinetic conditions in batch mode was evaluated by varying adsorbent dose (0.2–2.5 g/L), solution pH (3–11), initial dye concentration (30–400 mg/L), contact time (0–180 min) and temperature (303–323 K). The Langmuir isotherm model showed better fit to the equilibrium data than the Freundlich model. The adsorption capacity (qm) of SAC increased with temperature where qm varied as follows: 126.9 (303 K), 137.0 (313 K) and 149.3 mg/g (323 K). The kinetic uptake results were well described by the pseudo-second-order (PSO) kinetic for each temperatures. In the past decade, building environmental assessment methods have been developed in different countries for evaluating the building performance. Seven models used world wide in relation to environmental assessment of buildings, were compared on the basis of their covered. In this paper will be presented the summary of sustainable building assessment systems and the proposal of system applicable in Slovakia.

Lifecycle and ecomonical study of selected thermal solar installations

Term energy efficient building is well know from year 1991, when Austrian physicist Dr. Feist designed and built first passive house, using current physical and practical knowledge. In the next 25 years buildings using principles of energy efficient design have changed dramatically. In a good way. It is mandatory for Slovak Republic as a part of European Union to act according European parliament directives. One of directives concerns lowering total energy consumption and emissions in the building sector – Directive 2010/31/EU on Energy performance of buildings, also known as Directive “20-20-20”. According to this directive, Slovak Republic has agreed to lower total energy consumption in building industry by 20% until year 2020. Plan on lowering total energy consumption has affected creation of new – technical and energy efficient building materials with emphasis on environmental load. It this paper, ultra-low-energy family house located in Kosice, Slovakia was assessed from environmental and energy point of view. With help on modern diagnostic methods and thermo-physical simulation software DesignBuilder, we will virtually evaluate energy need of house throughout the reference year, and indoor quality from the environmental point of view, such as CO 2 levels and bounded energy using LCA method. Environmental and energy assessment of a family house

This aim of this paper is to explore the specific indoor environmental quality factors under different heating conditions in a meeting room of an administrate building located in Kosice. In terms of thermal comfort, a system with radiant ceiling heating provides more favorable results. Low relative humidity was recorded for both heating systems, which could be due to insufficient air conditioning settings. The results of measuring CO2 concentrations were almost identical for both systems and did not exceed the recommended limit value of 1000 ppm. The increase in CO2 concentrations was mainly related to the presence of employees in the monitored room. On none of the monitoring days, whether in the case of a mechanical heating system or a radiant ceiling heating system, the average 24 h concentration of PM10 did not exceed the legally permissible limit of 50 µg/m3. The presence of selected volatile organic compounds in the room has not been demonstrated due to effective ventilation by air conditioning. The results of the evaluation were comparable and smaller fluctuations in values can be attributed to other factors, such as the presence of persons in the monitoring room or the overall heating as well as ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
