A controller area network (CAN) is ideally suited to the many high-level industrial protocols embracing CAN and ISO 11898 as their physical layer. Its cost, performance, and upgradeability provide for tremendous flexibility in system design. This paper presents a brief introduction to the CAN operating principles, the implementation of a basic CAN bus using Texas Instrument’s CAN transceivers and DSPs, and a discussion of the robust error detection and fault confinement mechanisms. Some of the properties of the enhanced Controller Area Network (eCAN) are then discussed.

Research on the Controller Area Network

The main purpose of this paper is to develop reliable and affordable tools and methodologies for the design, simulation, and fault analysis of controller area network (CAN) bus networks. In this paper, a behavioral model of a CAN bus transceiver is proposed and experimentally verified. Moreover, we developed a methodology to efficiently manage the trade-off concerning accuracy, simulation speed, and convergence issues which are usually involved in the simulation of large CAN bus networks. To this aim, three different architectures of the transceiver behavioral model have been implemented: They can be selected by the user to address specific requirements of intended analyses. The architectures are based on a set of behavioral models of the basic mixed-signal circuit building blocks of the transceiver. The models were implemented using the VHDL-AMS language. Signal integrity, fault analysis, power consumption analysis, corner analysis, etc., can be effectively and reliably implemented. Simulation and experimental results, which demonstrate our approach efficiency, are reported.

A Controller Area Network Bus Transceiver Behavioral Model for Network Design and Simulation

Uma grande tendencia na area industrial tem sido a aplicacao de tecnologias de redes de comunicacao, como o protocolo CAN (Controller Area Network), como solucao em sistemas de controle distribuido. O maior desafio no desenvolvimento de sistemas distribuidos baseados em redes industriais e o efeito dos atrasos de comunicacao da rede no desempenho do sistema de controle. Este fato tem norteado o desenvolvimento de modelos e ferramentas de simulacao para calcular esses atrasos, analisar o desempenho e simular o comportamento temporal desses sistemas. Sob este contexto, apresenta-se o desenvolvimento de um modelo matematico e de um modelo com Redes de Petri Coloridas para simulacao de sistemas de controle distribuido baseados no protocolo CAN. Os modelos desenvolvidos apresentaram grande flexibilidade e potencial de aplicacao, permitindo a obtencao de diversos parâmetros relacionados ao desempenho da rede e do sistema distribuido. Alem disso, um caso de estudo referente a simulacao de um sistema distribuido com rede CAN para um robo movel permitiu evidenciar que os modelos desenvolvidos podem ser utilizados para a analise de qualquer aplicacao de sistemas de controle distribuido com redes CAN.

Modelagem e simulação de redes de comunicação baseadas no protocolo CAN - Controller Area Network

In this work, Session Initiation Protocol model is established by using Timed Colored Petri Nets (TCPN). SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a protocol developed to assist in providing advanced telephony services across the Internet. The Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) has become the quasi-standard for Voiceover-Internet Protocol (VoIP) communications. SIP is based on a client–server infrastructure in which user agents represent the end-terminals as clients, proxy servers handle SIP message routing between the user agents, and registrar servers store the client’s contact information into a location service. By use of timed color set and useful time attributes in tokens defined in CPN tools, timer and time-related problems of SIP are modeled and analyzed. Timer is an important part for SIP, especially the INVITE transaction.

Verification of Session Initiation Protocol Using Timed Colored Petri Net

The article deals with the research and development of reliable fieldbus communication using software tools. Since modification and testing of the fieldbus communication on real life targets can be both time consuming and expensive an appropriate simulation tool was being sought for. The tool should enable the user easy adding of new messages and/or nodes. Furthermore, changing the underlying communication protocol, e.g. Controller Area Network (CAN), to another one, e.g. Time Triggered CAN, should be possible.

Modeling Controller Area Network Communication

In this article a synchronous machine excitation system with microprocessor based twin-channel voltage regulator is presented. Block diagram of excitation system with digital voltagre regulator and twin-channel voltagre regulator are shown and the main parts of excitation system are briefly described. The responses of characteristic variables of excitation control system of synchronous generator in typical disturbances are presented.

Engineers in industry usually design new systems based on earlier experience and available development tools, Although this approach offers substantial advantages, there is also a great disadvantage. Introduction of new technologies is very difficult. Software modeling and simulation tools enable industrial users insight into systempsilas inner behavior before actually producing the system. In this paper a communication system based on the wire train bus is modeled using timed colored Petri nets. This system is verified for the desired properties and then it is validated. Validation is performed using two WTB units used in different real-life rail applications. The results, as well as possible future use of the model, are presented.

The paper deals with development of platform based, embedded, hard real-time systems for traction and power engineering applications. Such systems are intended to have lifecyle of more than 20 years. Several cases of successful projects based on two typical platform architectures are presented. Both hardware and software platforms and components are described along with some topics that can help to identify advantages and disadvantages of such an attitude. Particular attention is given to the problem usually not taken into account-component obsolescence.

Platform based development of embedded systems for traction and power engineering applications - experiences and challenges

This paper investigates the feasibility of integrating legacy software processes and tools into the paradigm of model-based development of industrial real-time embedded systems. Research has been conducted on the example of using legacy assembly code for automatic code generation scheme inside MATLAB/Simulink environment. A sample Simulink model has been presented, code has been generated from it and its correctness has been validated by back-to-back comparison with the simulation results.
