Economic and environmental assessment of electricity generation using biogas from organic fraction of municipal solid waste for the city of Ibadan, Nigeria

In this paper, the potential of recyclable municipal solid waste in each of the six geographical zones in Nigeria is presented with the aim of evaluating its energy saving potentials, economic and environmental benefits. The amount of recyclable materials in a stream of municipal solid waste is evaluated based on population model spanning from 2017–2036, waste generation model and recycling collection rate gathered from local literature, reports and publication from relevant institutions. The environmental advantage from recyclable municipal solid waste is conducted based on evaluation of its greenhouse gas emission potentials while the economic potential is estimated using cost adjustment factor method. Some of the results indicate that plastic is the most prominent recyclable waste in all the cities in the South-East, South-South and all the Northern parts of Nigeria. However, paper is the most available recyclable material in the waste stream of the cities in the South-West. The results also reveal that a total of 89.99 toe (1046.43 GW h) of energy could be saved per annum by recycling the recyclable waste materials rather than producing new products from the virgin materials. The saving in electricity could provide electrical power for about 9.8 million people based on available statistics of average electricity generation of 29,697,360.1 MW h and per capita electricity consumption of 107 kW h in Nigeria. Furthermore, a total of 11.71 million USD economic benefits could be realized which equivalent to about 16,562 jobs annually. The environmental assessment result indicates that a total of 307.364 ktons CO2eq of GHG emission reduction could be achieved annually.

Waste generation and waste management are critical environmental issues faced by countries all over the world. Furthermore, there are greater environmental, economic, and social demands on firms to reduce the environmental impacts due to environmental problems brought about by their operating activities. There is a current debate as to the financial implications of waste management expenditure on waste reduction targets. This study examines the relationship between waste management expenditure on waste reduction targets, and the impact of waste reduction targets on firms’ profitability. This study used the quantitative method that utilizes the multiple regressions method to analyses data from selected South African Johannesburg Stock Exchange’s (JSE) Socially Responsible Index (SRI) listed manufacturing and mining firms for ten years (2007–2016). The study tests if there is a relationship between waste management expenditure and waste reduction targets, as well as the impact of waste reduction targets on firms’ profitability. Results show that waste reduction targets have a positive, but insignificant, correlation on the profitability of firms, and also indicate that there is a relationship between waste management expenditure and waste reduction targets. The study recommends that firms should focus more on minimizing waste generation to reduce costs.

The Relationship between Waste Management Expenditure and Waste Reduction Targets on Selected JSE Companies

The Polokwane declaration on waste management is to stabilize waste generation and reduce the waste disposal by 50% by 2012 and develop a zero plan for zero waste by 2022 waste generation is an ongoing process which will continue, as long as humans exist. The types and quantity of waste generated in South Africa have however, changed over time often leading to constraints in municipal waste management budgets as this may not have been expected at the time of planning or budgeting. The technological advancement, emergency of affluent communities and rapid urbanization have contributed to the significant increase in waste generation per capita. At times the projected resources for waste management have proven inadequate resulting in poor service delivery by municipalities. This work seeks to make an estimate projection of the future waste quantities and generation rate to present an opportunity to make appropriate financial allocations for future waste management systems. The work demonstrates that at varying recycling rate (> zero) waste reaching the disposal site reduces gradually. The proposed model reflects that with appropriate policies in place, accurate waste management planning and resource allocation can be achieved.
