Design for multimedia learning

This study mainly seeks to investigate English teachers and Ministry of Education officials’ views on the implementation of CEFR in Malaysia. It also intends to explore the challenges encountered by the stakeholders in view of the adoption of CEFR onto Form 5 English syllabus and assessment. Data for this study were collected from questionnaires distributed to 331 English secondary school teachers and from in – depth interviews with two senior ministry officials. The findings revealed that most of the teachers had very limited knowledge, minimum exposure and low level of awareness about CEFR. Nevertheless, they were optimistic about the idea and believed that the framework is vital in order to improve the level of English proficiency of Malaysians. The officials in the ministry were also positive about the implementation plan despite the challenges and obstacles perceived. The teachers’ resistance, lack of training and negative conception that most teachers have namely it would be difficult to incorporate CEFR in their teaching are some of the main challenges identified in this study. In conclusion, the adoption of CEFR in Malaysia is seen as obligatory but sufficient time should be given by the ministry to ensure that all stakeholders are fully prepared and familiar with the framework before it is extensively introduced and used in the country. Visual literacy instruction in Cambodian ELT: an action research study and a new pedagogical framework

Materials development and evaluation is a relatively young phenomenon in the field of language teaching. In the practical sense, it includes the production, evaluation and adaptation of materials. Undoubtedly, culture is much more valuable than teaching and practicing the literary masterpiece. The need to integrate culture into teaching the second language particularly teaching English in a foreign context is not a new debate and has long been highlighted in countless studies. Societal values, attitudes and cultural elements are integrated with the communicative approach to enhance the effectiveness of L2 acquisition. Conversely, textbooks are an integral part of language learning in the classrooms. Yet, it seems to be common practice that foreign language textbooks and classrooms frequently overlook the conclusions drawn in such studies and neglect the essential information about the target language culture that would help students reach a cultural understanding to accompany their linguistic knowledge. Hence, it is the intent of this paper to examine the cultural elements in four English language textbooks: Interchange, Headway, Top Notch, On Your Mark currently used in Iran in order to determine the most prominent cultural dimension portrayed.

Aspects of Cultural Elements in Prominent English Textbooks for EFL Setting

This study aims to explore the impacts of preparing and presenting PowerPoint slides in EFL settings on the improvement of cohesive devices in EFL setting. In order to examine the effects of PowerPoint presentations on students' use of cohesive devices, sixty two BA students from University of Isfahan were randomly assigned into 2 groups.  The course was“advanced writing”. Each session lasted 90 minutes. One group received the traditional textbook teaching style whereas the other group received the power points of the same materials during ten sessions. Comparing the performance of two groups based on use of cohesive devices, it became evident that students in power point group performed better than students in traditional teaching style. (Frequency use of cohesive devices in power point group is 47.79 and the frequency use of cohesive devices in traditional teaching style is 27.79). Also results indicated that preparing and presenting power point slides had a significant effect on students writing achievement and their appropriate use of cohesive devices.
