Annotated methodological review of Lean Six Sigma

Successful implementation of the lean concept as a sustainable approach in the construction industry requires the identification of critical drivers in lean construction. Despite this significance, the number of in-depth studies toward understanding the considerable drivers of lean construction implementation is quite limited. There is also a shortage of methodologies for identifying key drivers. To address these challenges, this paper presents a list of all essential drivers within three aspects of sustainability (social, economic, and environmental) and proposes a novel methodology to rank the drivers and identify the key drivers for successful and sustainable lean construction implementation. In this regard, the entropy weighted Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS) was employed in this research. Subsequently, an empirical study was conducted within the Malaysian construction industry to demonstrate the proposed method. Moreover, sensitivity analysis and comparison with the existing method were engaged to validate the stability and accuracy of the achieved results. The significant results obtained in this study are as follows: presenting, verifying and ranking of 63 important drivers; identifying 22 key drivers; proposing an MCDM model of key drivers. The outcomes show that the proposed method in this study is an effective and accurate tool that could help managers make better decisions.

A hybrid approach using entropy and TOPSIS to select key drivers for a successful and sustainable lean construction implementation.

Manufacturing small-and medium-size enterprises (MSMEs) are reluctant to the implementation Lean and Six sigma methodologies (LSS) all the over world. This is traced to the impeding factors which seem stronger than motivating factors coupled with lack of proper documented evidence of LSS’s successful implementation in many MSMEs. This paper investigated the influence of LSS on the profitability of MSMEs in Nigeria. The population of the study consists of 450 manufacturing SMEs with 2250 employees. The sample frame is made up of 225 MSMEs with 1026 staff selected at random upon which copies of structured questionnaire were administered. 1002 valid responses received were analyzed. Pearson product moment correction (PPMC) confirmed the formulated propositions with negative association between awareness, achievement CSFs and LSS implementation and the profitability level of MSMEs. The result obtained shows that LSS implementation among MSMEs in Nigeria is almost none existing and has no influence on the profit level. The study recommended that CEOs of MSMEs should undertake training on LSS to enable them to provide a strong leadership and support the initiative, LSS consultants should be engaged to help drive the quality improvement approach and MSMEs should focus on the impeding factors to reduce the effect on the LSS implementation and achieve continual quality improvement, customers’ satisfaction, increase sales volume at a minimized cost to attain targeted market share and profit level.

Meningkatnya kemajuan dunia konstruksi di masa kini tentunya turut menimbulkan peningkatan kebutuhan terkait material yang digunakan, salah satunya ialah meningkatnya kebutuhan akan ready mix concrete. Banyaknya permintaan akan ready mix concrete yang tidak dibarengi dengan kontrol kualitas akan menimbulkan variasi kualitas pada produk. Fenomena ini terjadi di PT. X, salah satu perusahaan manufaktur yang memproduksi ready mix concrete.
Analisis data dilakukan dengan mengaplikasikan Lean Six Sigma dengan output berupa faktor penyebab variasi kualitas. Data sekunder yang digunakan berupa data mix design, data kuat tekan yang tercatat dalam intern perusahaan, serta data tes independen yang dianalisis melalui beberapa tahapan. Pertama dianalisis menggunakan control chart untuk mengetahui jumlah data yang diluar batas atas dan batas bawah, dilanjutkan dengan mencari tingkat DPMO (Defects per Million Opportunities) yaitu indikasi berapa banyak kesalahan yang akan muncul jika sebuah aktivitas diulang satu juta kali. Kemudian dilakukan analisis pareto diagram untuk mengetahui permasalahan utama yang akan dilakukan tindakan improvement. Terakhir dilakukan analisis untuk mengetahui proses yang akan dilakukan improvement menggunakan fishbone diagram. Tingkat DPMO tertinggi ready mix concrete mutu pada produk PT. X berada pada level 3,136? dengan variasi kualitas sebesar 31,5%, faktor penyebab variasi kualitas dari analisis ialah kurangnya evaluasi manajerial keatas dan kebawah, kualitas material yang dipakai kurang baik serta perlunya perbaikan terhadap spesifikasi material tersebut.

Business environment , being in a constant change , needs a quick adaptation to global market requirements. Applying Lean Six Sigma is not only key to survive in a global market, but also provides the necessary resources which are redirected to business development. It is found that organizations have many different approaches regarding improvement but they all share the same goal which is to increase theirs customer satisfaction. The ﬁndings suggest that improvement is most effective when a holistic view is used which address improvement in all organizations processes using a successfull excellence model such as Lean Six Sigma.
