Gamut mapping transforms the colors of an input image to the colors of a target device so as to exploit the full potential of the rendering device in terms of color rendition In this paper we present spatial gamut mapping algorithms that rely on a perceptually-based variational framework Our algorithms adapt a well-known image energy functional whose minimization leads to image enhancement and contrast modification We show how by varying the importance of the contrast term in the image functional we are able to perform gamut reduction and gamut extension We propose an iterative scheme that allows our algorithms to successfully map the colors from the gamut of the original image to a given destination gamut while keeping the perceived colors close to the original image Both subjective and objective evaluations validate the promising results achieved via our proposed algorithms

Gamut Mapping in Cinematography Through Perceptually-Based Contrast Modification

Emerging display technologies are able to produce images with a much wider color gamut than those of conventional distribution gamuts for cinema and TV, creating an opportunity for the development of gamut extension algorithms (GEAs) that exploit the full color potential of these new systems. In this paper, we present a novel GEA, implemented as a PDE-based optimization procedure related to visual perception models, that performs gamut extension (GE) by taking into account the analysis of distortions in hue, chroma, and saturation. User studies performed using a digital cinema projector under cinematic (low ambient light, large screen) conditions show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state of the art, producing gamut extended images that are perceptually more faithful to the wide-gamut ground truth, as well as free of color artifacts and hue shifts. We also show how currently available image quality metrics, when applied to the GE problem, provide results that do not correlate with users’ choices.

Gamut Extension for Cinema

Much more is possible in achieving brighter, more vibrant colors for a richer visual experience in emerging, wide-gamut display media. Yet, both digital cinema and broadcast TV content fall well short of this promise. In this paper, we provide the means for realizing this promise by identifying certain memory colors e.g., green grass, red, and blue sky and rendering each independently making use of the full gamut of the display media while identifying and maintaining flesh tones to their original intent. Further, a means is provided for extending the gamut of not just wide-gamut, but any display media by simply lowering the white point of the display.

Gamut mapping is the problem of transforming the colors of image or video content so as to fully exploit the color palette of the display device where the content will be shown, while preserving the artistic intent of the original content’s creator. In particular, in the cinema industry, the rapid advancement in display technologies has created a pressing need to develop automatic and fast gamut mapping algorithms. In this article, we propose a novel framework that is based on vision science models, performs both gamut reduction and gamut extension, is of low computational complexity, produces results that are free from artifacts and outperforms state-of-the-art methods according to psychophysical tests. Our experiments also highlight the limitations of existing objective metrics for the gamut mapping problem.

Mapping Standard Image Content to Wide-Gamut Displays.

— The effect of varying the color gamut of an extended-gamut LCD on color appearance and preference was measured psychometrically in two experiments at each of two separate laboratories over a representative set of 10 images each. The first experiment measured the effect of color gamut on appearance, and the effect on the appearance attribute colorfulness was shown to be relatively strong compared with other attributes as the volume of display color gamut is varied. Overall, colorfulness monotonically increased at constant sensitivity as the gamut area in xy chromaticities increased while tending to become less and less sensitive to increasing the gamut volumes in CIELAB and CIECAM02. In the second experiment, the overall preference indicated an optimal color gamut for the display gamut volume even though the results were shown to be highly scene dependent.
