The invention relates to a method of creating a casing in a borehole formed in an underground formation. The method comprises the steps of (a) installing a tubular liner (11) in the borehole (1), the liner being radially expandable in the borehole whereby the liner in its radially expanded position has a plurality of openings (12) which are overlapping in the longitudinal direction of the liner, (b) radially expanding the liner in the borehole, and (c) either before or after step (b), installing a body of hardenable fluidic sealing material (13) in the borehole so that the sealing material fills said openings and thereby substantially closes said openings. The sealing material is selected so as to harden in said openings and thereby to increase the compressive strength of the liner.

Method of creating a casing in a borehole

A mono-diameter wellbore casing. A tubular liner and an expansion cone are positioned within a new section of a wellbore with the tubular liner in an overlapping relationship with a pre-existing casing. A hardenable fluidic material is injected into the new section of the wellbore below the level of the expansion cone and into the annular region between the tubular liner and the new section of the wellbore. The inner and outer regions of the tubular liner are then fluidicly isolated. A non hardenable fluidic material is then injected into a portion of an interior region of the tubular liner to pressurize the portion of the interior region of the tubular liner below the expansion cone. The tubular liner is then extruded off of the expansion cone. The overlapping portion of the pre-existing casing and the tubular liner are then radially expanded using an expansion cone.

In using this equipment, the valve is open when the setting tool is positioned within the well packer for setting of the well packer so fluid can pass through the setting tool and into the packer hydraulic setting mechanism. The valve is closed when the setting tool is removed from the well packer in order that fluid can flow through the setting tool and also through the bore of the well packer mandrel for fluid communication through the well tubing to a location below the packer without leakage into the annular cavity above or below the packer.

Single string retrievable well packers

A slip deployment mechanism for use in conjunction with a packer in a tubing string includes a cylindrical retainer telescoped over the upper ends of a plurality of slip segments and interfitting means on the segments and a mandrel coact with the retainer to keep the slips locked in place. A longitudinally acting spring reacting against a lateral reaction surface on the mandrel urges against the slip segments to advance them into an initially set position between an expander head of the packer and the interior wall of the casing when the retainer is moved from a locked position into a release position to free the slip segments. A stop acting between the mandrel and the retainer prevents the lower end of the retainer from binding against the slip segments in service use.
