Powder metallurgy of titanium – past, present, and future

Titanium matrix composites (TMCs) offer high specific strength and stiffness compared with steel and nickel-base materials. High-temperature TMCs can offer up to 50% weight reduction relative to monolithic superalloys while maintaining equivalent strength and stiffness in jet engine propulsion systems. Regardless of the reinforcements are continuous fibres or discontinuous particulates, the unique properties of TMCs have thrust them to the forefront of extensive research and development programmes around the world. Even though TMCs are one of the most studied and sought-after material systems, useful information about their properties, fabrication methods and design is scattered in the literature. This review covers important research work that has led to the advances in TMCs material systems. It also provides comprehensive details about common reinforcements, manufacturing processes, and reviews static and dynamic properties of some common TMCs. The review also presents common industrial applications of TMCs and highlights the promising outlook of TMCs.

Titanium metal matrix composites: An overview

Low cost and good performance are two major factors virtually important for Ti alloy development. In this paper, we have studied the effects of alloying elements, thermo-mechanical treatment and particle reinforcement on microstructures and mechanical properties of powder metallurgy (PM) Ti alloys and their composites. Our results indicate that low cost PM Ti alloys and their composites with attractive properties can be fabricated through a single compaction-sintering process, although secondary treatments are required for high performance applications. Three new PM Ti alloys and one TiC/Ti composite of high performance are developed, and new design principles are also proposed. For design of PM Ti alloys, addition of alloying elements has the beneficial effect of enhanced sintering and/or improved mechanical properties. For example, Fe element accelerates the sintering process, Mo and Al are good candidates for solution strengthening, and rare earth elements effectively increase the material ductility by scavenging oxygen from the Ti matrix. For the design of Ti-based composites, in situ formation of strengthening particles and solid solution hardening of the matrix both should be considered simultaneously for alloy development. Cr 3 C 2 is found to be a very suitable additive for processing particle reinforced Ti composites.

Design of powder metallurgy titanium alloys and composites

Advanced powder-metallurgy technology has led to the development of the CermeTi® family of titanium metalmatrix composites. Reinforcing the titanium alloy matrix with titanium carbide or titanium boride particles results in superior properties. These discontinuously reinforced titanium composites have excellent room- and elevated-temperature properties and are exceptionally wear resistant. High quality, near-net shape CermeTi composite components are being produced commercially and are being evaluated for potential applications in military vehicles, commercial automotive engines, sporting goods, industrial tooling, and biomedical devices.

CermeTi® discontinuously reinforced Ti-matrix composites: Manufacturing, properties, and applications

A consumable billet for melting and casting a metal matrix composite component is made of a consolidated powder metal matrix composite having a titanium or titanium alloy matrix reinforced with particles. The preferred billet is a blended and sintered powder metal composite billet incorporating titanium carbide or titanium boride into a Ti--6Al--4V alloy.

Titanium diboride/titanium alloy metal matrix microcomposite material and process for powder metal cladding

Disclosed herein are titanium-tungsten alloys and composites wherein the tungsten comprises 0.5% to 40% by weight of the alloy. Also disclosed is a method of making such alloys and composites using powders of tungsten less then 3 μm in size, such as 1 μm or less. Also disclosed is a method of making the titanium alloy by powder metallurgy, and products made from such alloys or billets that may be cast, forged, or extruded. These methods of production can be used to make titanium alloys comprising other slow-diffusing beta stabilizers, such as but not limited to V, Nb, Mo, and Ta.

Titanium tungsten alloys produced by additions of tungsten nanopowder

Impact resistant clad composite armor and method for forming such armor. The impact resistant clad composite armor includes a ceramic core, and a layer of metal surrounding the ceramic material and bonded to the ceramic core. The metal layer is formed by cold isostatically pressing powder metal surrounding the ceramic core to a high initial density followed by vacuum sintering. The composite armor may be hot isostatically pressed to densify the powder metal to approximately 99% full density.
